What instead of vermiculite?

Hello!
I read whole PF tek for simple minds, but i have no ways to get the vermiculite. What can i use instead of that?

In this case I would recommend to use rye grain and case it, there isn't really a good alternative  to vermiculite.

Ok, just one more question.
Can i use this method but with no casing? Just for cakes? http://www.fungifun.org/grain
