if its working where you have them. you don't need an incubator. IMO, i thing an incubator is best for many reasons.

Using an incubator is not an absolute, but it would probably speed up that colonization rate, minimize the possibility of contamination and provide the darkness you would desire for that stage in development.
You can actually obtain the Perfect incubator for Free.  Go to your nearest pet store, and ask the for a couple of Styrofoam cases w/lids.   The ones they receive their tropical fish deliveries in.
Take is home, wash it with a strong bleach solution, dry it, spray with Lysol, and you are good to go.

I agree that an incubator is the better way to go. It's a clean, warm, dark place. IMO, If you can control those three variables you are probably going to see faster and better results. I use an old igloo cooler and depending on the time of year a submersible heater.

okay thanks i have another question. one of my jars has a yellowish tint at the top of it is normal or is it a mold? i also would like to know about dunking is it nessicary? if it is should i also roll the cakes in dry verm?

fattrout

on the yellowish color you see, i would have to see a pic..
as for dunk and roll its not necessary. but i highly recommend it..

okay i will do the dunk and roll thanks. but i dont know how to put a picture on here lol plus its still in the jar so i dont even think you would be able to see it cuz its a very light yellow. is there a yellow mold that you know of?

If they are almost done I can only assume they are metabolites. What are your room temps? and temps with the heater?

Mustang,
Molds and contams come in a wide variety of colors.  At the stage of colonization, I believe,......  If it ain't white, it ain't right.  I'm sure you would rather toss one jar instead of the whole farm.
Mycelium should be pure white in appearance.
But, if you choose to proceed with that jar, I would advise isolating it from all others as best you can.  Contaminants love to communicate, and spread bad news,...
Also, if you set up an account at imageshack.com you will have the ability to upload photos which enables others to view and help you with the issues you are having.

the temperatures stay about 82 to 87 but yeah there about 90 to 95 percent done but i will try to put a picture up so you can see i have three jars going and only one of them have it

psilocybin warrior

Thats too hot, i'd say the heater is unescessary right now if your room temps are 74+. If they're that far along it's most likely metabolites and they will rinse off with your dunk.(don't that that word until I see a pic tho)

really? i thought they were supposed to incubate at like 86 degrees? but i cant get that site to work for me. should i take the heater off of them?

malabar

Mustang,
I incubate at a constant 80F, for sure Never above 82F indoors.

oh okay thanks i will lower the temperature. do you think they will turn out okay even though they incubated at that high of temperatures ? sorry about asking so many questions this is my first grow so i dont really know what im doing lol i have had them incubating for a month now and it is just now getting to the bottom of the jars. would a incubater speed up my next batch?

malabar

Mustang,
Where are you located?  That could perhaps have something to do with the growth pattern, or speed,...
In the future, if growth gets slow towards the bottom, you can flip your jars, and gently tap the substrate down to exchange air, and give the bottom a chance catch up.
As for speeding up you colonization,....  I won't say the incubator will do that directly.  But, by creating a constant and stable growth environment, you can be sure that have done your part, and won't have to monitor things so closely.
By getting creative, you can more or less automate things, and each stage of growth will be more predictable, allowing you more freedom.  As you become more experienced, you can make investments to truly automate your  lab.

i actually tapped the bottom today and can already tell the difference they have grown quite a bit in one day so that probably helped. i am located in nc. but i have 5 more syringes and i am ready to inoculate some more any advice on what i should buy to make them better? i used brown rice flour for the ones i have going now think i should change that?

malabar

Mustang,
You live in the same "region",.... I'm in N. Florida, so there shouldn't be any issues due to altitude or air pressures.  So, take the info that you have been given, make some notes, as what worked for you, and highlight your errors.
Get that incubator going on, and do a bit more research.  I can't give you any specifics on BRF Tek, since I have been growing with grains, compost, and casings for many years and have no experience in that BRF field.
Many, if not most here have grown the cakes and I am sure they will be more than willing to guide you through the woods,......
Stay with it and be patient, it will come to you.  Best of luck with your grow.

After growing on BRF cakes and experimenting w/ dunk and roll, and casing the cakes you pretty much have the knowledge to move on to grains. The popcorn tek is pretty cool and wild bird seed is another great method. IMO grains and casings are the way to go. I've seen great flushes on BRF cakes, so to each his own. Have fun...

mustang1986

okay im still kinda worried about th yellow tint at the top of the jar? should i just throw it out or do you think its just metabolites? i cant get imageshack.com to work for me any other ways i can get a picture on here

dub504

you don't actually have to have an account w/image shack to post pics. On their homepage use the browse upload feature. After that it will give you links and or html code that you can paste into your post on this forum. Pictures will really help everyone help you...
