Best rye grain casing?
« on: January 18, 2010, 09:43:30 PM »

Going to case some rye grains in a week or so, wondering what the best casing would be for them? Verm/PM? Straw/manure? do i need to use lime for PH levels?

bigfat, you can use a number of casings, that will work fine. i prefer a 60/40 verm/coir mix. as for lime i have never used it...

I like to throw a bit o' lime in for my own edification; never done without it so I don't really know if it makes much difference.  In theory it does, so...

Not much, just a heaping teaspoon or so.  A little goes a long way.

Straw/manure isn't really a casing. It's a bulk substrate. I like the 50/50+ casing mix. http://www.shroomery.org/54/50-50-Casing-Tek

I use 50/50 peat/verm or coir/verm. Either one seems to work equally well. Never used any lime though.

There is no "best" casing layer.
Simply because a casing layer is to be non nutritive.
"Best" casing layer is all a matter of opinion.
If your trying to figure out how your gonna get the most via casing or w/e , then you need to figure in Humidity , Temps , Multi-spore vs. Isolated , Nutrients within the substrate , etc, etc.

I use topsoil for my casing layer. <---- Thanks Anno !!!!  :D
