Cultivation / Problem :Casing depth to substrate depth
November 03, 2010, 04:45:47 PM
Hey, I was just checking the archives and found out that the casing depth should be 1/4 of the depth of the substrate. I made mine closer to 1:1 ratio. Am I screwed? What should I do?

Haha  Well from the casing guide I used, ( http://www.shroomery.org/54/50-50-Casing-Tek ), it told me to put a 1/2in layer of vermiculite at field capacity on the bottom, then your substrate, then your casing mix. So that's what I did.

I used a slightly bigger one, 12x9x3in. That isn't too big is it? I cased all 4 jars, so now is the moment of truth, will I succeed or will I get contamed? Wish me luck guys! I'll post pics once the casing starts colonizing.

I would think its safe. Alot of people from here ordered there equipment from amazon, including me, and we haven't had any trouble. I bought my tropic aire system, air pump, PC, and the hydrometer.

Thanks, I'm casing tom. as soon as I get out of class . How big of a tray would you use for 3 or 4 pints of popcorn? It would be sweet if I could case them together since I only have one FC right now.

Cultivation / Nuking vs. PCing Casing

Hey everyone,
I about a week away from casing my popcorn and I was wondering which way I should go with my casing. Last time I microwaved my casing and I got the Green!!! But then again, I let my casing get alittle to warm for comfort when incubating it, so this could have increased my contamination chances. Should I microwave or PC, also for how long and in what? Thanks for the input guys. Hope Life Is Good

Mushrooms tend to grow in groups, which are called flushes. So from what you are saying, you're on your 4th flush? If so, you're probably near the end of the road with that bag. I personally wouldn't try to dunk it, because you're right, it would probably fall apart. I would just try and keep it a hydrated with spraying.

I'd imagine a bit of water could do it some good. Though you don't want to directly spray too much otherwise it can create overgrowth. Is this your 2nd or 3rd flush growing?

From what most people say, grains are the way to go. There are a number of different types of grains you can use, such as popcorn, wbs, and millet. Though you need a PC to do grains. I just knocked up my first jars of popcorn a bit ago and I'm liking the way its going so far. Im sure others will have some opinions as well.

Sounds awesome man. Thats strange that those 2 grams hit you as hard as they did. Maybe it's the strain or maybe it was the whole idea that you just ate something that you grew and harvested yourself. Well watever it was congrats brotha!!!

Nice  Can't wait to see your pictures! My jars are really starting to take off. The weird thing is that my jars are colonizing on the bottoms much quicker. After they become a little more colonized, I'm going to give them a good shake. Any suggestions on colonizing corn anyone?

It depends on which one you got. If you have the cheap, non digital hydrometer then yes you stick the thing to the inside of the FC. If you have a digital hydrometer, then it should have a little sensor attached to some wire so you can place the sensor around the cakes and place the actual hydrometer outside of the FC so you can easily read it.

You can always get a cheap one at a pet store. They are used for reptiles, so it should be in that section. Though I would recommend getting a digital one. I got mine from amazon and it works great! Here's the link.

You might be able to shop around a bit and get a better price but that's the exact one I have. GL man!
