Hi guys,

So it has been two main attempts now using about 22 jars, innoculating with syringed spores from the net. I used the same ingredients both times; vermiculite, brown rice flour & water, at different ratios for different tests. I tried incubating a batch in a draw using a heat mat, but i think i almost, or did, kill quite a few because the temperature went up to 35*C.
I got growth from most of the jars but none more than half the jar.

Please give me advice on perhaps an alternative substrate mix? maybe more nutritous for the myc. And also advice on temperature for incubation.

Much appreciated,
Peace&Caps

PF - Tek / Substrate Consitency - brf cakes

Howdy fellas,

First batch ever, innoculating my cake jars with syringes. My pressure cooker only fits 3 jars in so i've been doing batches of 3, making up the substrate a bit differently each time as the recipes i've read aren't all the same. I have 2 batches of 3 jars, the first of which i accidently added to much water to the mix and it went gloopy and not grainy. But i thought o well, added some more verm in and spoon it in the jars, p. cooked and then shot it with spores. To my surprise the myc appeared in what was probaly just one day. A few days after i did another 3 jars but with less water, the substrate was crumbly and filled the jar much neater than the prior and i gave it a satisfying compress. That batch however is growing slower than the first at the moment. Just want to know people's preferences of substrate ratios and how much moisture does the verm and brf need?

peace & love

Cheers man. You rekon i could do it without that peroxide stuff and do it cake to cake? i could just sterilise a spoon in the p. cooker...

As for my knowledge of tek, this is the first time ive tried it and i don't know anyone who's done it, so my only resource is online tutorials (which often contradict) and you guys!

Experimenting teaches you lessons.
Don't put your PC on your carpet to cool down!
Shit man, that's my deposit gone.

Hopefully it will all be worth it, by the way the cubensis spores i'm using is...

Right!
So tonight i have made my substrate, sterilized and innoculated 3 jars, (as i could only fit 3 jars in the PC, i rekon i'll do 3 jars a night until i have 12).
I was very careful to make everything sterile using a small bathroom, bleach spray and alcohol to clean.

I was going to incubate the jars in the airing cupboard (20*C - 30*C) but in my manual says they need indirect light? So they're sitting on top on my tv at the moment and my room really isn't warm enough (20*C).
Any Suggestions?

I just bought some de-ionised water from the garage. Apparently this is very similar to distilled water. moorS, boiled water is different to distilled water, you need a bit more lab equipment to distill. But if tap water has worked i get your point. I'm gonna use the de-ionised water now, i have 2 litres of it.

I was just about to start making my substrate when i realised i need distilled water!
Where can i get this stuff from in the UK? And what about deionised water?

Right, so ive found 2 suppliers for the type of jars i want; one has taperless jars the right size but does a minimum of 24 jars per order and im not paying £50 for glass jars!
The other has jars for 89p each but they have a slight taper. Can someone tell me from experience how flexible the cakes are when removing from the jars?
Here's the link for jars i'm hovering over at the moment. Please tell me if the taper is too big or will be fine.
