Title: Average time for cakes to fruit?
Post by: crazyd on March 10, 2009, 02:35:15 PM
Hey guys.  I've had my dunked and rolled cakes in my fruiting chamber for 4 days now.  I built a chamber using an aquarium air pump that is pushing air through 2 rock bublers, up through water and clay pellets.  It looks to be very humid inside and I have kept them in light about 10 hours a day, just in my bathroom, getting light from 2 normal bulbs.  Average temp has probably been 73 or so.  The cakes very quickly showed new mycelial growth.  What is a normal timeframe to start to see actual fruiting?  (These are mazatapecs)

Thanks!

Probably within the week, cut ur light down to 6-8.  Is there enough FAE?

Fresh Air Exchange.  the cakes need plenty of fresh air.

Yes...there is a constant supply of fresh air, coming up from below the cakes via an air pump and going out thru a few holes in the top.

I've got the same fc going average temp about 69, humidity 99% air exchange from bubble stone underneath perlite but i have one non-dunk and rolled in with two dunk and rolled, been over a week and all im getting from the two dunk and rolled is spiky mycellium all over, the non-dunked is fruiting kinda weak, wondering whats up, what i can do to get something out of the dunk-and-rolled.

Yeah, mine have been in there 1 week as of tonight.  No fruiting yet.  I'm still not sure what an average time might be?  Seems I read that several days is normal?  But I also think I saw that sometimes it can take weeks.  Anyone know?

My cakes usually start to pin about five to six days after the dunk and roll. As for the one cake that you did not dunk, it is probably not growing well  because your cake is drying out.

Lol, back in the day when I was doing pf-tek. I had puerto rican's take around a month before they started pinning, but once they pinned they were full grown and potent as all hell in a couple days.

I've definitely got ONE pin on one of my cakes.  I guess that is a good sign...we'll wait and see!

Okay, so my one cake with the one pin is doing okay, but now I've got another with a bunch of small pins!  This is very exciting!  It has been 9 days since I placed them in the fruiting chamber.

The 2 with pins birthed 12 days ago.  The spiky mycelium one was birthed 5 days ago...

Crazyd

I'm a newby currently incubating some mycelium and making a fruiting chamber.  I've been instructed to use perlite (PF-TEK, etc.).  What is the brownish red material you're using in those pictures?  Is that some sort of clay?  Thanks.

They are called expanded clay pellets.  One brand name of them is Hydroton.  You can order them online, or at a local hydroponics store if one is available.  I was going to use perlite, but someone on this site recommended the expanded clay pellets.  They are reusable (you can wash them between uses), and relatively cheap.  I bought 10 liters at a local store for $10.  I placed 2 rock bubblers (basically aerators used in aquariums) at the bottom of the tank (linked by rubber tube to an air pump), covered them with about 2 or 3 inches worth of the expanded clay pellets, and then filled it with water to just below the top of the pellets.  It has seemed to work really well.  The chamber stays very humid and you don't have to worry about airing it out...you just poke some holes in the top of the container and the air flows from the rock bubblers, through the water and out the top of the chamber.  This is my first grow, so I don't know any other way, but my cakes are fruiting and it seems to be working well.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

They are growing slowly....I'll post then when they get a little larger.  Most of them are about 1/2" right now.

can you post a few pics of your fruiting chamber?
I'm also a newbie and I'm trying to decide whether to use the terrarium they use in "let's grow mushroom videos" or the ones describe in the forums. THERE ARE SO MANY ALTERNATIVES it drives me crazy!

Yeah, I know what you mean.  I'll be honest...my first growing attempt is NOT going well.  BUT, after a good bit of reading and asking questions, I think I have a decent fruiting chamber at least.  Read the string called "CAN'T GET RH ABOVE 90!!! Please help!!!"  in this forum and you'll see the pics.

which incubation technique did you use?
time exposed in light, temp, etc....

To incubate I bought 2 rubbermaid tubs that were the same size.  In the bottom one I layed down a fully submersible water tank heater and set it to around 82.  You then need to put down some rocks, or cups, or anything else in the corners so that when you put the second rubbermaid tub into the first one, the tub doesn't go down all the way and touch the heater.   You fill the bottom tub, the one with the heater, with some water enough that when you place the second tub in (with the innoculated jars in it), the water level rises so it comes up several inches above the second tub.  You are essentially surrounding the top tub with warm water.  The second tub will most likely just float on the water if you don't really weigh it down with something.  I actually just used shoelace and basically tied the top tub down to the bottom.  Then I just put a bed sheet over the innoculated jars in the top tub, kept a wired temp gauge in there with them, and let them sit.  I think anywhere around 80 is an okay temp from what I've read.  When I finally did it right, I'd say it took 3 to 4 week for the jars to fully colonize...I think many people can do it much faster.  Good luck.  I'm about to innoculate 2 new jars tonight...so far I really have nothing to show for all my efforts, so you might want to PM PW or Baph or fattrout...they know WAY more than I do.

Here's a photo of what I just put my jars in...can't tell much, but you can see the 2 tubs, the top one being weighed down by an amp and containing the jars and a blanket, the bottom one containing the water, the water heater, and 4 half crushed cola cans to keep the top tub from touching the water heater.

Hey crazyd .. just a thought .. as I have been reading .. are those tubs on the floor?  such as carpet .. carpets hold a lot of contams in them .. not sure how they would hurt your tubs .. but from what I understand shouldn't they be up off the floor at least a foot or two?  Most of your molds etc. grow on or in the lower parts of the floor and walls ...

yeah, I was just talking with a friend of mine .. he said on the floor is fine too for an incubator.  I just feel more comfortable with my incubator up off of the floor so as to avoid any contams at all.
