Title: Best Disinfectant: ETHANOL?
Post by: Demented on October 21, 2005, 10:51:55 AM
Can I use selfmade 74% Ethanol (96% Ethanol and aqua dest.) as a Disinfectant?
Or what would be the best Disinfectant for growing shrooms?
Sagrotan med. works good but is really expensive.

For how long can spore syringes and prints be kept (in the fridge)???

Is there a way to order Petridishes with Malt-extract agar in austria?

And is there any other vendor in Autria than mm.org, i am not sure if they are trustworthy

Thx,
Demented

Yes, it should work reasonably well.

Syringes: Up to 2 years.. better up to 6 months.

Prints: for decades.

There probably is, but it could be very expensive. Better make yours.

I don't know any others, but they are thrustworthy.

Should the ethanol be "unverg?llt" or "verg?llt"?

For disinfection it doesn't matter.
For consumption is should be "unverg?llt".

This might be a little late for you, but I was researching this about a month ago and posted this elsewhere:

According to a Chemical Disinfection Summary I saw at work alcohols (ethanol, isopropyl alcohol) have a variable effect against some bacterial and fungal species and is ineffective against spores. Chlorine Compounds (bleach) however provides good penetration and quick microbial kill. It is corrosive to metals, and has some sporicidal activity.

I still use 70% ethanol at times with my glassware and equipment since I don't want to corrode my metal equipment, but since it won't kill contaminating spores (which I have a ton of) I throw everything I've got into the dishwasher between uses.
