Some years ago I interviewed a shiitake farmer in west central wisconsin. He stressed temp and moisture control and he did hose/mist/spray them down to get this effect. He was using red oak upper limb logs only about 5-6 inches in diameter. Yes he waxed and innoculted much heavier than those of yours shown. The red oak limbs are actual trash left from logging crews. After the logs were spent from production, he burned them in his outside boiler to heat his operation which was in a old dary cow barn. Very cool old dude, back in the 90s he was grossing over 20,000 dollars US. Just in his spare time he did all the marketing and delivery himself too. Now the story takes a sad turn. He went on a vacation for a month or so and left someone entrusted to carry on hjis business. they botched things up so, he ended up out of business. You may want to contact Shiiga or the wisconsin shiitake growers association. I am sure they will be very helpfull to you friend.

Cultivation / ideal grow time??
May 05, 2009, 05:49:02 PM
Ok now, best grow times or ideal time in your opinion, from inoculation to full maturity. You see the time laps vid of the Ecuadorian growth that is  2 1/2 days?

The farm outlet store is in a town a few miles away. Logistically it may not be feasible for you to get that pricing. I am fortunate enough to be in an area where much grain is produced. Also it seems the closer the feed and seed stores are to a larger city,... the higher the price becomes. Earlier when I mentioned the grocery store as a source for grains, it was with a view to someone who need a certain amount just to get started. I have friends and neighbors who farm to so I am always able to get corn at its' base market price.

If economics and volume is what we are talking about,.. You may find this interesting. I am looking at my invoice for 100lbs of corn fine ground to my specs for 13.50 total. Yes just thirteen dollars and fifty cents for 100 lbs of corn meal. Now that is hard to beat.

Don't rule out adding some potato to the grain mix either, a very economic and available ingrediant too. Either cook and mash them first or go with the instant buds. I know of a one who has done this for years. Tra-La - La I see they saw.

Glad to here all the good reports and feels on wbs and popcorn. Based on what you are seeing and feeling. There is no reason why a mixture of wheat, barley and or oats mixed with corn, would do the same if not much better. A trip the grocery store and you should have it for under $10 too. 2-DA- Lou 2 U

There are many places. If you are in town or a city, a healthfood /organic store often has organic grains whole or ground for many uses. Out in the rurals or burbs a farm and or feed and seed store would be able to help you here too. Ok?
