Title: Choice of Milo or Millet from feed store?
Post by: lazylightning78 on October 25, 2009, 04:20:19 PM
What say you?   I know they are both grains....but I would like to know which one is easier to prep and if the simple tek of just adding water and pc'ing is still viable after all these years.   I will be doing these in qt. jars    Nice site, btw

Lazy,
I would lean more towards using the Millet over the Milo.   As for the preparation, soak the grain briefly , ( about 20 minutes) then strain the grain and PC.   It only needs to be moist. Just under  "field capacity" .

my 930 will hold 17 qts   so just put it in my 5 gallon bucket with a strainer lid  maybe rinse once and then soak in tap water for twenty minutes    fill my jars 2/3 and pc for 90?

Basic millet or birdseed recipe for 1 pint jar
100g (3.5 oz~140 ml~0.59cup) birdseed
60-70g (60-70 ml) water
knife tip full of gypsum (optional)      you think it would end up being the same as this    should i add a little gypsum?

and obviously i should let it strain for a while if i don't just add the water     am i thinking too much here....all those cats on the other board are so enamored with all the soaks and simmers and adding coffee, etc  ugh    info overload over there

Lazy,
Not only are you thinking too much, but you are trying to incorporate too many tek sources.
If you are using WBS, that will also involve a soak.  Probably overnight, as to catch and remove those Endospores, Sunflower seeds, and Floaters, then a simmer and a couple of rinses/strain prior to the PC.
**As for Gypsum,....  I have Never used it.  It's optional, so if you just want to spend your cash, I suppose you can add it.
I suppose the ratios you listed are good.   I have been doing this so long, I don't even think I personally own a measuring cup any longer.

Lazy,
Just shake the strainer for a minute or until it stops dripping and load the jars.  PC for 45 minutes, and away you go.

Lazy,
Sorry to hear about you and the bags,.  I know nothing about them.  But, I do spawn for bulk to straw or compost in Oven Baking Bags .
As for your old "teacher", we must be from the same school.  Though I at one time I would measure and sweat out the small details, now it's routine and I trust my eyes which have seen Many a successful grow in these years.
What I do know is,.......  If it works and ain't broke, Don't try to re-invent it!

Grains can seem a little daunting at first. There are a lot of different Teks out there. A good rule might be to soak grains overnight that are not for human consumption i.e. WBS. The grains that are ready for consumption like BR, Barley, Oats etc. from a grocery, soak 20 min.
