Title: newby help
Post by: Kanter on April 16, 2009, 04:28:40 PM
Hi,

I need some help. I just started with cakes. I grow my cakes on vermuciliet and rice flour and injected them with the spores. Couple of days ago (20 days ater inoculation) the cakes were compleetly covered and i moved them to a box with 15 cm soaked perliet. I've been away for 48 hours since and now i'm back i find some white foam (mostly on top of the cakes). It still all smells nice, but i'm not sure whatn to think of the foam. ANy answers?

Foam? Three to four days after I put my cakes into my FC they usually become covered with a layer of nice white fluffy Myc. Is that what you mean? Or are you really seeing some kind of bubbly foam? If the latter is the case I have no idea. Maybe someone else on this forum can help.

MT is probably right, it's probably just new myceleal growth, I wouldn't be too worried about it. At this stage of full colonization, the mycelium is able to fight off invaders, so it is somewhat unlikely that a contaminate would be the problem. Good work ^_^

To bad l previous posts were deleted :(. I've got some questions; a couple about my cakes and one about this forum.

1) The fruiting on my cakes goes well (i think). I've got dozens of small shrooms on each cake and a couple of bigger ones. But the mycelium is also growing something else that doesn't look like a mushroom. All cakes have some small white 'blubs' attached to it, they look a little like pebbles but feel soft. What are they, and what should i do with them?

2) On other question relates to the huge size difference between the fruitings. I've got one that is the size of my thump while most others are still really small. Does this matter? Do i have to pick the bigger ones earlier or all at the same time?

3) My tank is transparant from all sides. It's positions so that it doesn't get any direct sunlight. Now i get the feeling some shrooms are growing horizontaly or even downwords. Does this matter?

4) I humidify the tank using perlite. I forgot to put some aluminium underneed. When i moved the cakes i got quite a lot of new mycelium growth (see first post) which also moved into the perlite, meaning that there is now a layer of about 1 cm of perlite attached to the cakes. Is this a problem? Should i scrape i of before the next dunk and roll?

5) This is the forum question; I'm unable to upload pictures. I tells me the I can't get access to the upload path. Any hints or should I upload my pictures else where an then link to them?

Ok thanks looking forwards to your answers.

Use photobucket.com  - easy to use and never fails me.

I would put on a pair of clean, clean gloves and lift the cakes up and put the clean, clean, clean (alcohol wiped) foil underneath. You want to stop mycelial growth and have them put all their energy into fruiting. My 2 cents.

Just out of curiosity, only because I havent seen the answer anywhere...

If there is new myc growth on the actual mushrooms, is that bad? Will it affect the taste? Does it need to be scraped off?

Thanks

If you are reffering to the white fuzz that grows on the base of the shrooms just let it be. It doesn't affect anything, nothing changes the nasty ass taste of the cubensis~!~!

Get those cakes off the perlite.
Put foil or a lid under each cake.

Ok thanks again for all the support. I've got an other question thou. I'm trying to dry some shrooms i picked. First day in open air, but after that i found some articles about boxes and perlite, so i but them in my pressure cooker on top of a layer of perlite. This morning (a day in the cooker) i found them covered with a blue grayish darkening on the stems (see pictures). Can anyone tell me if I should worry about this?

Yeah you bruised them, be fucking gentle asshole! And what you said before makes no sense to me so I can't answer or respond to it sorry.

Yeah, what PW said (well except the asshole part - lol), you do  need to be gentle with them.  Why put them back into your pressure cooker to dry them?   Just go to Bed, Bath and Beyond and get a DEHYDRATOR, the one with adjustable temps. from 95-150 and keep it on the lowest setting.  It is cheap, and your shrooms dry nicely.

Perlite for drying?  that dosent make sence.  the only thing youll get from that is rotting mushrooms.  put them on a rack like they are on in the picture and put a fan blowing on them.  or get some dessicant, or a food deydrator.
