General topics / Why i love fastblast!
May 09, 2010, 05:21:05 PM
I used a mixture of poo/fastblast from crystal point supply, and here are the latest results from my mini-mono tub! The tub is pretty darn small( 9X5) and my cake was about "1 deep i had to transfer the cake into a big fruiting chamber as the fruits were trying to grow thru the lid! these trays are what i picked from 1 side of the cake!!!! AMAZING! you can see the difference in size of the fruits on the dehydrator trays. THIS is why i love fastblast!

General topics / Spring time is killing me
April 09, 2010, 02:41:42 PM
So with spring, singing birds and love in the air ALSO come
TONS of gnats and other pesty little creatures! I went to check my 7 day old mono tubs and all 5 were infested with gnat larva!! Oh the pain! It was not a pretty sight as they were fully colonized and would have been nice, but they all now rest in the compost pile outside.

So im PC some new WBS jars and doing the whole project over. Just a heads up in case your weather is getting warmer also. Those little pest's are out in full force.

March 15, 2010, 08:51:33 PM
if contams were human id punch them in the face multiple times.
30 jars smelling like sour apples! very annoying. think il stick to grains, seem to have better luck with them. on a lighter note i found a place that sells P. Azurescens prints for $10! awesome!  -_-

Cultivation / using grains without sterilizing?
March 13, 2010, 06:30:53 PM
So i found this on another mush info site and thought id post it and see what the pros thought about this method. wonder what types besides cubes this might work for. any ideas?(again i can take no credit for this tek...wish i could )

recently, while experimenting with fermented substrates, I discovered an easy way to create grain spawn without the need to sterilize anything. I am using it for Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus eryngii. A few tries indicate it also works for Stropharia rugosoannulata, Coprinus comatus and cubes, perhaps also for Agrocybe aegerita. No success with Agaricus bisporus yet.

Heres what you have to do:
- Soak the grain for 24 hours.
- Cook it shortly, so the kernels wont germinate.
- Rinse it with clean water.
- Fill jars half with the cooked grain.
- Add water until filled up to three quarters.
- Remove kernels, which are floating on top.
- Close the lid loosely.
- Wait.
- Turn the jars every day or use a clean spoon and stir around.

After a few days lactic acid fermentation will start, like in bread baking with sourdough or like in bacterial contam. This time it is what we want. You will notice bubbles of air rising and a sour and fruity smell appears. Let it bubble for another few days.

Possible problems:
- If you notice a whitish film on the surface, there is yeast growing on top. Use a clean spoon and remove it.
- Some kernels will rise to the surface. If you don't move the jars, they may stay there, dry out partially and green mold can grow.
- Sometimes, When waiting too long like one or two months, other bacteria take over and produce acetic acid, which seems to be toxic for mushroom mycelium.

The PH falls from 7 to 4 and after a week or two, the grain is ready. Strain the water and inoculate with fresh and clean mushroom stems or mycelium growing in wood or straw. Use at least a spoonful and don't mix. Just put it on top. Now it will take several days for the mycelium to adapt to the low PH. The above mentioned mushroom species are known to digest bacteria, so they will happily eat whatever they find and grow vigorously and dense into the grain.

The whole process takes longer than the sterile way and needs a bigger amount of starting mycelium, but you don't need a pressure cooker, HEPA-filter, glove box and all that stuff. You can work on your kitchen table and open air. Just be clean. Of course you should keep the jars closed after inoculation, but you can safely open them from time to time, if you want to check the smell or whatever. The high amount of lactic acid and the active bacteria will prevent mold and yeast from growing, even if spores are present.

A few days after complete colonization, you can use the grain spawn to inoculate wood chips, straw or more fermented grain. Don't expect to be able to shake the jars to separate the kernels. Use a spoon to break your spawn into small pieces. When going to straw or wood chips, mix well.

Thats it for now. Have fun with this method and please post here if you find out it works for other species too. Lentinus edodes will possibly not work well, as shiitake mycelium usually separates itself from bacterial contams, building up the usual brown surface. It may take weeks, until it grows further into the fermented grain.

General topics / heres a weird one!!!
February 23, 2010, 06:17:17 PM
So it seems that my friend up in the great north west was doing some goofball experiment (as usual) with his fungi....

sems he ground down 2gms of dried cubes into a fine powder and steeped
a tincture ofr a few hrs THEN dropped a few drops into each of his eyes several times through the course of one night, and seems to be having some
problems with himself a few days later. now im no expert and im all about ingesting cubes, but id think it wouldnt be such a good idea to put fungi water directly into your eye's? thats just me though. no report from him as of today so dont know how things are progressing.  ^_^ ^_^

Cultivation / casing my grains with??
February 22, 2010, 08:10:59 AM
im torn on the best way to case my grain bags, the rye grain bags are almost reading to go into the FC but i am having trouble picking the best casing. cor/verm? straw/manure? plain old potting soil? any suggestions?

i am trying to acheive a decent bulk grow from the 2LB grain bag. im a little hesitent to use straw as it seems to contaminate easy from what ive read. im also a little confused as to weather i should lay down the grains then just top with casing choice? or mix grains w casing medium THEN a top layer? couldnt find a detailed tek that compares.

Cultivation / Fruits look to have overgrowth?
February 21, 2010, 01:50:10 PM
So these few cakes look to have alot of overgrowth to the stems.
FAE twice a day, humidity ranges 93-99%, temps in the day are around 76F and 68F at night, using a tropic air setup, the light source is natural and sufficiant as well....any suggestions cause im a bit stumped
(the discolor is from bruising)

Cultivation / Rye grain bags are colonizing too slow
February 20, 2010, 01:51:36 PM
so i have a 2 LB bag of rye berries that are colonizing very slow.
i innoculated the bag on jan 29th with some MAZ. and the grains
only show slight grain colonization. i have shook the bag once about 7 days ago to move the grains around...they look a bit dry as well. i was thinking of
shooting some sterile h2o but not sure if thats a good idea or not. any suggestions?

Cultivation / Panaeolus Cyanescens
February 15, 2010, 06:13:25 PM
So im attempting a panaeolus cyanescens grow. Im undecided about using either grain bags or the BRF/Manure tek. any suggestions or tips for these?
Also had been toying with the idea of using staight horticulture grade potting soil when fruiting them as i tried it with some cubes and it worked really nice. anyone used potting soil for these and had any luck? -_-
