Cultivation / Popcorn results
December 15, 2009, 12:26:20 AM
Here is a breadpan of popcorn with a verm casing. First flush was 180 grams which is double what I usually get. I'm trying to upload photos.

You want the coir to be at carrying capacity with water. This will help it hold the heat in the microwave.

I would not want it in a substrate. You could experiment with it in casings. I would try 40/40/20 coir/verm/guano. Pasteurize in the microwave or sterilize in the PC. I've never seen a mushroom on a sea island so it may not be a good fit.

I have a BRF cake that is 90% colonized with a spore print I took of a malabar fruit. If it makes it and produces, it will be my first ever full cycle grow. The strain was chosen in honor of a certain poster.

You can sterilize your casing material in your PC. You can also do it in the microwave. If you don't have access to either then I would case with an inert material like verm.

A well tended 1/2 pint cake will yield around 6-10 grams dried. That's why people move on to grains. But hey, 6-10 is enough to get well off the ground (unless you're a Malabar).
best of luck

I've found that using the lids with polyfill is far superior a method than the 1/2" of dry vermiculite barrier. You drill  a couple of 3/8" holes in the lid, fill the holes with polyfil and you are good to go. I even spray (lightly) the polyfill with Oust as one more layer of protection. don't let the contams get you down. clean up and begin some more jars.
good luck

:mellow:we are having our first major snow storm of the season so I won't be going out tonight to buy millet. I do have six jars of pure popcorn just getting started and three jars that are almost done but I don't have room in the fruiting chamber for another tray or two so I put them in a dark drawer that is unheated. Hoping that they will go dormant. What do you folks do to extend the time of growth?

Thanks Malabar. It's great to hear from the experienced on this. I've been having success with LC'ing popcorn alone. I thought I'd try the millet added in "just for fun".

So, I've been reading good things about how fast millet colonizes and I thought I would add some to my next set of jars. I mostly do cakes and jars of popcorn. I thought by adding 1 cup of millet to 2 cups of popcorn I'd get a good comparison. What has worked for me with popcorn is to measure out what I'll use, cover it with 3" of water and PC it for 25 minutes. When I did that with the millet added, the millet all burst open and turned into sticky starch goo. I had to throw it all out. So my guess is, you just soak the millet for 12-24 hours to hatch any endospores but don't actually cook it. Is that right? do people use millet/popcorn combos?
Note: went to store, bought more popcorn, innocced 6 jars. Life is good.

Don't worry about the hollow stems. As you get more skilled you can take the best fruit and clone it for future projects. I'm surprised that you didn't get more contamination from crumbling your partially colonized cakes. Congratulations on your sterile technique. the best way to increase yields is to grow more and more often.

My 2 cents. Popcorn is a great way to go for the newbie (that would be me). It's cheap and easy to work with. I may mix my next batch with millet to see if yields change or if the overall time is less. I have had no luck with wheat berries and my attempts with WBS have been mixed. Popcorn is fast, especially with a liquid culture innoculation. It's all fun.

Hmmm, so you have 42 cakes spread out over a month of innocs I suppose? It will be interesting. Shrooms aren't machines and you may find that many or all will decide to fruit at once. Hope you have a very large FC. Of course, you can always make your cakes go dormant by putting them in the fridge. That's a danger for contams of course. I'm just thinkin you may be overwhelmed. Good luck. Post pics.

42 jars?!? You making cakes or grains?

Hey Tenaglia. Great to hear that someone is having good results with Elixier. I've got some in the fridge. What zone/state are you in?

I've been having very good results with TAK Mt. strain from Ralph's.

Ralphsters = no problems. Prompt. Responds to questions. Fixes mistakes. Good source.

As I said at the beginning of my post, I have had multiple failures with azurescens. Even following others instructions I have had jars of chips contaminate just as they finished colonizing. I have had spores that failed to germinate. I have had jars that stalled out and I have had mycobags that turned bright colors only days after innoculation (yes they went through the PC). So the advice to follow the tried and true does not guarantee positive results, it just increases the odds. Azurescens are tough to grow. I'm still trying.

Just did a search on the phrase you quoted and received this: And I fell into the dream, right through the floor, reaching out to you
