Title: Overincubation?
Post by: mistag on July 13, 2009, 10:23:20 AM
Is it possible to incubate a cake for too long? How long can you store a colonized cake without putting it into a fruiting chamber? Will this affect the mycelium (like cause it to dry up or something)??

Yes, up to around 4 weeks in the fridge, i'd say no more than 1-2 weeks still in the inc. This topic has been covered several times, try using the "search" function

Mistag,
I must be honest.  I only colonize grains, but in theory it ia all the same minus a few minor prep steps.
When you state "over incubate" , after a little chuckle, I  would be inclined to say it would be a, no.    With grains, if left in the incubation stage too long, eventually the substrate will begin to pin, and fruit.
In that case since there would be a lack of oxygen, space, and moisture,.......  The organism will expire.  That would be TOO LONG!   I think the same would apply with cakes.  They would literally suffocate, or drown.  Get stinky too!
As for storage.  You can't really "store" a growing medium, of Any kind.  That would be like sticking kids in a box, until you decided you were ready for them.  lol  * Although, unlike children, you can slow the growth down to a crawl for a short span of time, perhaps a couple of weeks or a bit more by placing the jars, protected in wrap, or baggie in the refrigerator, ( No Freezing! ).  I say in a baggie or contained since there are so many forms of bacteria, and virus that would love to mutate or attack your fungi in the fridg.
And, be sure retarding the growth should not be long term either.  Long enough exposure to the cold will result in a dehydration, toxic shock, or permanent retardation, which the culture may not recover from.
My advice is to be sure of your time parameters, and be prepared to follow through once you begin.
Be sure,...  If you don't do your part to make it a "Happy Place" for the little guys,...... They won't do theirs,....and may not even make an appearance.
I know it's a little long winded, but I hope I answered the question, or heped you in some way.

yes, for a short time like PW said. maybe 4 weeks. i have done it. but i don't recommend it. it slows down the growth and makes it hard for the mycelium to recover and start fruiting.. for best results one week after fully colonized. birth those suckers..
