Title: Dropping RH for Casings
Post by: Deadneck on March 30, 2009, 04:46:33 PM
Hey Guys,

I'm still up in the air about going with cakes or a casing. I wanted to ask everyone whose done a casing what the best way to drop the RH from 95% - 100% to 90% after the pins are visible? Any and all advise is much appreciated.

Later,
DN

research mono tubs. Do at least one set of cakes first and then check out the mono.

Well, my original plan was to set up my cakes in a shotgun FC and not do the casings the first time around, just b/c it was the cheapest way. So I'll probably take JR's advice and do cakes first and then reformulate my plan of attack on the fungi, and keep collecting all available information. I'm always open for new options and opinions.

Ok, after doing more research on the Mono Tub, I found the shroomery forum:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5930161/an/0/page/0

that explains how to make a mono tub, I'm confused as to what goes into the Mono Tub. From what I can tell from reading that forum is that the myc colonize in the tub. "Once full with bulk substrate/spawn, leave the tub closed to colonize."

I am most familiar with the PF Tek, with the cakes and all, so this is throwing me off a little.

Can I ask you guys how to make the substrate/spawn for the mono tub? Is it any different than a casing? I know there are hundreds of different techs and each one has its own requirements.

Any help on the Mono Tub is much appreciated.

u spawn (colinized grains or cakes) to a bulk sub (coir, hpoo, straw, etc.) after the bulk sub is pasturized... here's a link that might help http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/9289857/an/0/page/0 (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/9289857/an/0/page/0)

u should have a sub level thats 4-5". hers a spawn calculator to help u determine how much bulk/spawn u'd need to reach ure desired amount http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7973880 (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7973880)

follow those 2 teks and u should be good. GL! (there's also a link to ohmatic's monotub tek at the end of larg_does's, but the 1 u have is good)

*coir can be found in most animal stores by the reptile section.

you have to get creative, i use poor man pods. with the tropic-aire system for my RH and FAE... work great for cakes RH is 99+. but i just started my 1st casings. so i thought how am i going to get that RH down. so i took a 2nd air pump installed a regulator adjusted the air flow into the pod untill my RH droped to 90..

Thanks Sin, but unfortunately I am a Mac user and I can't use the Spawn Calculator (son of a bitch). The first link you posted says "Access Denied." I'm signed up with Shroomery and everything. So basically I can't access any of your help.

It's very much appreciated, but do you have anything other suggestions?

Many thanks,
DN

ok try these, their similar (same idea)
-http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8311725 (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8311725)
-http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7953949/an/0/page/0 (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/7953949/an/0/page/0)
-http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6004845/an/0/page/0 (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/6004845/an/0/page/0)

the idea is to first pasturize (not sterilize) the sub.  then u take ure spawn (colinized jars) and either layer it or mix it with the bulk sub (i like layering- sub first, spawn, sub, spawn, sub etc... with sub on top) go with coir ur 1st time... its simple. u can use straight coir but the more u add the better. but again, i advise to keep it simple 1st.

hope that helps a bit

Big thanks Sin,

It's hard to find those posts on Shroomery sometimes, thanks for that. Let me make sure I have this straight:

I'm still going to inoculate all my jars (verm, BRF, water) w/ my spore syringe and let them fully colonize.
Then I use those colonized jars to layer/mix-in with the pasteurized substrate in the mono tub? Is crumbling the cakes the best way to do that? Am I on the right track here?

Peace,
Deadneck

yup, crumble them up and spawn to the bulk sub.  then u have to let the bulk sub colinize (the whole thing) then introduce to fruiting conditoins.  u can case or not case, if casing i suggets using 60/40 verm/peat.

here is a cool link...cased vs uncased, c if it works

Yeah, that link worked. Time to make some decisions on my end. What set up do you use Sin? i.e. size of tub(s), amount of bulk substrate, # of colonized cakes needed for bulk subs. Also, do you case?

Sorry about all the questions, trying to make up my mind here. I just need to take it one step at a time.

Thanks again,
Deadneck

Dread, I hope everything goes well for you.
I kinda feel like I'm exactly on the same page as you and your questions are the same as mine.
This thread is definitely helpful thanks to all the are posting.
Thanks everyone!
