Psilocybe cubensis Growth Parameters

Spawn Run:
Relative Humidity: 90%.
Substrate Temperature: 84 - 86°F / 28.8 - 30°C. Thermal death limits have been established at 106°F / 41.1°C.
Duration: 10-14 days.
CO2: 5000 - 10,000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour.

Type of Casing: After fully run, cover with the standard casing whose preparations described in Chapter VIII. Layer to a depth of 1-2 inches. The casing should be balanced to an initial pH of 6.8 - 7.2.

Post Casing/Prepinning:
Relative Humidity: 90 %.
Substrate Temperature: 84 - 86°F / 28.8 - 30°C.
Duration of Case Run: 5-10 days.
CO2: 5000-10,000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 0 per hour.
Light: Incubation in total darkness.

Primordia Formation:
Relative Humidity: 95-100%.
Air Temperature: 74 - 78°F / 23.3 - 25.5°C.
Duration: 6-10 days.
CO2: less than 5000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1 -3 per hour. (For practical purposes, fanning a terrarium 2-3 times a day is sufficient)
Light: Diffuse natural or exposure for 12-16 hours/day of grow-lux type fluorescent light high in blue spectra at the 480 nanometer wavelength. (See Chapters IV and IX).

Cropping:
Relative Humidity: 85-92%. (For cakes: 95-100% )
Air Temperature: 74-78°F / 23.3 - 25.5°C.
CO2:less than 5000 ppm.
Fresh Air Exchanges: 1 -3 per hour. (For practical purposes, fanning a terrarium 2-3 times a day is sufficient)
Flushing Pattern: Every 5-8 days.
Harvest Stage: When the cap becomes convex and soon after the partial veil ruptures.
Light: Indirect natural or same as above.

Moisture Content of Mushrooms: 92% water; 8% dry matter.

While the growth slows to ~1% putting your LC (Mycelium water) in the fridge still produces growth. As you can see from the above heat is the only thing to worry about.

Did you lysol your lab/workspace?
I dont even bother with a glovebox.. Never used a flowhood. I have a spare bedroom converted to a clean lab.. HEPA filter runs 24/7 and I spray the room heavily with lysol and wait about 5 mins, then its time to work
I always flame sterilize and cool with alcohol soaked cotton balls.

Sounds like your noc procedure is fine.. Troubles arose during/after the dunk.

Ive heard of people injecting a cc or 2 of distilled water into pf jars with some success.. They could just be drying out.

I sent you a PM with the info so let me know what you think and we can go from there
Boo your PM's i was looking for info on going brf - WBS (well grain) and the post got cut short.  oh the humanity

QuoteIm not sure what part of the country you live in .. or what the 3 strains you got are. let me know. but if you keep your house at 69 - 80 dont use the tit incubator (the 2 tubs and the heater) while they will colonize slightly faster at 80+ the warmer you keep your jars the higher the risk of contams taking over. I colonized thoes 20 jars at 70F - 75F i got 100% contam free jars. Alot of info on incubating cubes says its an outdated method and does more harm then good for new growers.

I answered that for you in the pm i sent you like a week ago.
but to reitterate no it wont... cooler temps slow colonization and lowers risk of contams but anything over i think its 67F is fine dont quote me on that # it may be lower Dark may be able to nail the low temp no growth #

Now my box looks like this.

i have 9 qt jars underneath that were done with the "lets grow mushrooms" video on grain prep 2 days ago. they look like this

Welp my 23qt pressure cooker arrived this morning i have 5lbs of WBS soaking for 24 hours i put it in the water at 3:00pm est im sooo ready. Ive got a question on this however, i have 10 brf cakes in consolidation stage and am using one of them in a SAB to inoc my grain jars. do i have to wait the full 7 days as if i were birthing to a SGFC? or can i use a cake thats been 100% for 4 days? im using doc's wbs tek and spawning using Damion5050's verm+coir tek. Any suggestions or tips on my mono tubs? maybe you can tell me where i put my holes? iircc its 2L+2H+2L+2H ? or maybe it was 2L+1H+2L+1H?

TIA for any advice.

PS I'm running 2 monotubs for my first spawn attempt. Think this will produce a bit of fruit.

Cultivation / How I made my alcohol lamp
December 02, 2012, 01:02:48 AM
Since I'm an inexperienced grower and cant contribute to that aspect ill share what I've been doing. I made my alcohol lamp using the following process. If this setup has been done before and posted somewhere forgive me. If not and you can use it I'm glad i could help.

The List.

  • Power Drill (or hammer)
  • 3/16" - 1/4" Drill Bit (or nail)
  • A nice square of Aluminum Foil
  • 2oz - 4oz Shot Glass
  • Box Cutter (razor)
  • 1/2 Pint PF Tek Jar, Lid, and Ring (Doesn't have to be a PF Tek lid it can be a new one i already had holes in all my lids)
  • Perlite
  • 90%+ Isopropyl, Denatured Alcohol, Ethanol, or Ethyl-alcohol.
  • Masking Tape
  • An old Sock (Preferably one with a hole in the toe, So glad i found something to do with these guys)
  • Pair of Scissors

Start by gathering all your materials.

Or if you don't have a drill.

Next i make the wicks, I took an old work sock that had a hole in the big toe and i cut it in to strips about 1/2" thick and the length of the foot , i only used the material of the sock you can see in the pic VV.. approx 5 - 6", the material above the heel had too much elastic banding.

Procede by drilling (nailing) a hole in the center of the lid like so...

Notice the outside of the lid is very rough ?  To accomplish this you want to drill slowly when the drill catches the last of the metal it will hesitate you want to force the hole from that point, what i did was reversed my drill and forced through with a backwards revolving bit. If your using a nail and hammer you need to wiggle the nail in the hole You want a couple nasty burrs on it. More about the burrs later.

Now we foil the lid .. take the square of foil and wrap the lid tightly with it, if your using a new jar lid, and you only have one hole, you don't need to foil the lid. I used foil to cover the 4 inoc holes that were still there.

Nice burrs.

Now that the lid and the wick are done, on to the tank.
Take 2-3 strips of masking tape, depending on the width of your roll, you want it long enough and wide enough to cover the mouth of the shot glass..

Now we take the box cutter and we "carve" the outer edge of the shot glass rim like this...

When we take it off it looks like this...

The tape is to keep perlite out of your tank when we fill the sides.

Set the shot glass aside and get out your perlite put a 1/2" - 1" in the bottom of the 1/2 pint jar. You want to make the shot glass just shy of even with the lip of the jar..

Now we can fill the space between the jar and the tank with perlite.....

Now peel the tape off the tank fill with alcohol....

Yea i used my nice frosted glass Jagermeister shot glass.

Now we wick the lid, dip the wick in the alcohol making sure its saturated, wring it between your thumb and fingers as you pull it out of the tank dip, press the wick tip through the lid from the inside out (going with the burrs) remember the burrs? Pull around 1.5" of wick through the cap, pull back slightly on the wick locking it on the burrs, put the rest of the wick in the tank, and set the lid ....

Screw the lid on and take a 3 - 4" x .5" strip of foil and wrap it around the base of the wick where it meets the burrs locking the foil in place.....

Light it up, sterilize, and get to nocin.

I wrote this up because the people on these forums are very helpful, Being new to this hobby i don't have much to offer, hopefully this can help at least 1 person making this worth the time it took to write up, and balance some book somewhere.

condensation is normal heres a pic of condensation on the inside of my jars.

Quote from: darksyde on November 24, 2012, 12:53:10 PMI havent read all you've posted, but I just wanted to make sure you realized that using WBS or any other grains, will require a PC.  A steam bath wont provide the pressure and heat to kill off any contams that could be at the core of the grain.

Yea this is why i started with pftek. Well that and the fact everyone says to go pftek for your first grow. i started a little late in the year and with xmas comming up and all i dont have the money to drop into a pressure cooker.... were done with our xmas spending so now i can get one.. then ill be using the WBS (if this type is ok to use) i only bought it as a nagometer to constantly remind me i need to get PC. (it was on sale).
I bought "lets grow mushrooms" and watched it 5 - 6 times so im pretty confident in my adventures. Just keep reminding myself to keep up my sterility.

For your SGFC are you using a fan, or manually removing the lid for FAE?

Heh funny you asked that i was just about to post some pics of my chaimber to see if my perlite depth was ok or not. Ill be fanning manually till next friday then ill be adding a fan.

heres the pics.

the Perlite is at 4" but theres only 3.5 inches from the top of the cake to the lid. its a 51qt tub i can give length x width dimensions if needed/it helps.
Other than the depth im ready to fruit woowoo.
