Cultivation / Identification Assistance OR WTF is this?
September 21, 2007, 01:02:16 AM
The last batch of wbs jars i innoc'd have something not seen before.  They seem to have a lot "milky" liquid in bottom of hars.  Does anybody know what this is?  How it happened / what causes it?  Is the colonized portion of the jar sitll good / can be used?

Any help y'all might have would be most 'preciated.

Thx,

Cultivation / ph balance
September 18, 2007, 09:53:06 PM
OK, I'm confused (Yea, I know tell ya somethin new) but if a casing is supposed to provide a layer of protection for the myc and help retain moisture but have no nutritional value, then what role does ph play?

For example - I started adding a small amount of crushed oyster shell to 73,30,10 casing and it seems to have  helped as my second and even 3rd flushes seem to be more plentiful, larger and the time between flushes shortened ever so slightly.

So, is that because the ph stays @ a more consistent level longer?? Or is it due to nutrients lasting longer for the myc to draw from??

Anybody else using a slow acting buffer that could help explain to me?

Thx,

PF - Tek / pf tek experiment - replication
August 21, 2007, 07:13:09 AM
To see if my previous experiment could be replicatedand, prepared were 4 pint jars using pf tek and brf.

1 jar was prepared following directions of tek as closely and accurately as possible - with the exception of using fine verm as I never was able
      to locate medium
3 jars were prepared according to tek modified by a mixture of approx 50% fine verm, and 50% crushed cob with BRF increased x 50% for added
nutrients and "bonding agent" for cob.
Inoculation was made with spore syringe from own spore print using about 2.5 cc per pint jar.

After 2 days following innoc, growth was seen in 3 of 4 jars.
    After 7 days, 3 o4 4 jars show approx 30% colonization.
1 jar prepared according to tek without cob or increase of brf still shows no signs of growth.

If all proceeds as before in experiment and fruits are once again harvested, this will provide an alternate method to pf tek.

IMO, when using fine verm with pf tek, correct water content is more difficult to determine and achieve.  Fine verm also tends to "pack" more so than medium grade verm and therefore must be the cause for my inability to successfully produce mycelium growth using tek in conjunction with fine verm.

Has anyone used any of the extraction methods?        I'm currently trying the Everlear method and was curious to if anyone had tried this and the success of it or any of the other methods.

I'd been told to expect bigger fruits from 2nd flush, but NEVER did imagine anything like this!!  Here's a pic of a couple of the biggest MONSTERS.

Beside the fact I was late harvesting, outta town & unavoidable, is there anything wrong with these size shrooms??

peace out all,

Cultivation / Bulk and pinsets
August 08, 2007, 02:20:57 PM
Harvested my very 1st flush from my "mini" bulk tub of hay/cow shit (excuse me, straw and POO).  What do y'all think??

Turned out pretty good I thot, over 600 grms NET (deducted tare this time).  Gotta love the straw / poo - so much simplier - IMO - than cakes.   -_-

Pinning was not consistent tho across casing at same time and must work on this.  Any ideas why that might be?  Possibly casing too thick in areas?  Thus the late emergence of the other pins??

Any suggestions?

Thx!

Cultivation / Dry Casing?!?
August 05, 2007, 02:43:32 PM
It seems as though my casing is drying out even tho I maintain a temp @ 76-78 & rh @ 94 - 96.
How do you mist your casing to keep from drying out when pins and shrooms are everywhere,
coz you're not supposed mist these or get them wet, correct?
                             - OR -
Is this moisture loss typical as they begin fruiting and not a concern until after 1st flush?

Thx,
p4p

Many thanks do I extend to everyone for their advice, opinion, assistance, information, as well as ya'lls patience with me, in helping me with my first tray!!!    Although it is nothing of record nor would it blow anybody's skirt up, it was still a success no matter the size.

Thanks again!!

Cultivation / Martha
August 03, 2007, 08:13:16 PM
OK, after almost 30 days, my "experimental" jar of B+ brf cake w/ crushed cob is now FINALLY ready to case.   I will have to do a flat tray as I had no expectations of success and did not use a wide mouth jar.  So,,,, will have to "dig" it out of jar.   The other smaller experimental jar of GT, I spawned to a  straw/ manure/ verm and topsoil mixture (another experiment).  The myc are eating this shit (mixture) up - literally!! So far it looks very promising, but will just have to wait and see.

I figure it's time I took another step and manufacture a Martha type closet.  More out of necessity than anything as my closet floor is quickly losing space.  Am trying to keep it somewhat simple and the few I found on the net seemed very elaborate, which I know I'm not ready for.

Does anyone have any suggestions where I might  find a few ideas for design /construction or possibly  some links that might show the steps in making one?  Any assistance would be appreciated and I'd be much obliged!!   -_- -_-
Thx!

Cultivation / Rule of Thumb??
August 03, 2007, 02:03:26 PM
Helluva time now to ask this question seeing as tho I have hundreds of pins that just began to show their heads (waiting to post pix 'til I see more than just pins).  But as I am getting ready to prepare another mini - bulk tub and some wbs trays as well, thought I might get some clarification.

Is there a rule of thumb for distance from top of medium to top of container? i.e. in a straw / manure bulk  tub or a type of tray (height for clearnces not withstanding)?  Did I read somewhere that gases will collect near the top of the medium and if it is a lot lower than the top of its' container that the gases can "smother" the myc even IF fae is done 3 or more times a day?   Should height be kept to minmum when possible?

Thx!

Cultivation / Pinnig and RH
July 29, 2007, 09:12:23 PM
Hey Anno,

I read between you and baph - did I understand that rh needs to be high, near 100, for a wbs trays during pinning and after pinset, lower rh to low 90's?  Is that right?

ALSO, today I pathced my bulk casing and do I now drop temp and maintain high rh (just as with the wbs tray)? The container is too large for a fc, so do I cover top of it w/ clear plastic or plexiglass with holes for gas exchange and fae often or cover w/ no holes in and fae?

Thx in advance for all your assisatnce

Cultivation / Ants????
July 24, 2007, 06:13:25 AM
HELP!  I noticed that some small ants (piss ants) have found their way into my box of colonized staw / manure  (hope they OD - lol).

Has this ever happened to anybody else?  Anybody out there know what I shoud do?   What could happen by their presence?

THX,

This is my first try at posting pics so I hope this is correct procedure.

The first pic is from experiment after trying to use the fine verm in pf tek.  After no signs of growth, I tried again by
adding a 1/3 of crushed cob to recipe, sterilized and innoculated.  (Psilo Warrior - I think I may have not judged water content correctly and was too wet on my original attempt with tek.) Growth appeared after just a few days and spread quickly throughout jar.  As it began to coloize, growth slowed and appeared to pause. Removed jar lid, repaced with coffee filter and let "breath" for 10 mins or so and replaced lid. Growth picked back up and began colonization again.  I'm hoping it continues to colonize and no contams as this is all that is left of B+ syringe.

These pix are using straw / manure as bulk and spawning by layering colonized WBS.

Now should I wait before top is completely covered with myc before casing?  Or is it time to case now?

If this turns out to be successful, I'll propbably never try brf cakes again!!

THX to Psilo Warrior, anno and Baph for their help and guidance!!

Cultivation / Fruiting Bulk
July 14, 2007, 11:24:30 PM
Accidently posted in General Topics - so please excuse my redundancy. ^_^

My WBS jars are near 100% colonized after 8 days and almost ready for bulk spawning.  (Still no signs of any growth after approx 23 days with the PF Tek and the fine verm).  Am using the straw/manure as bulk and am uncertain about a couple of things that I hope I may get a little input on.

A.  After I add spawn to bulk sub, I lay on top of bulk a cover of plastic wrap with many puncture holes and leave alone in darkness for full colonization, about 5 days. Is this correct?

B.  Once the bulk is colonized, I then add my sterilized casing and again as before, lay piece of plastic wrap on top and put back into dark for approx 3 - 5 days and until I see uniform growth poking through top of casing (patching where needed) and begin fruiting process.  Is this correct as well?

C.  When fully colonized sub w/casing is evident, do I then add my trays of bulk into fc? Or do I cover w/ plastic wrap - no holes - and fruit directly from the tray?

Just wanted to confirm my steps and need a little clarification on what to do with cased trays ready for fruiting.

Thanks in advance for any info or tips anyone may have!!

Cultivation / wbs casing
July 09, 2007, 03:24:34 PM
I recently tried the wbs tek and all my jars are colonizing very quickly  -_-(much quicker than brf cakes). Am about ready to case my wbs but, have had difficulty finding coir.   I tried searching for other types of growing caing methods but could only find spawning teks.  Can anyone help with another growing / casing method?
Thanks!

Wit a few minor modificatins, couldn't one use a microwave for sterlization of substrate?  wouldn't the microwaves eradicate any contams?
