Title: On contamination...
Post by: hauntedgraffiti on June 29, 2008, 08:08:45 AM
I don't want people to know that I'm growing mushrooms, so I want my setup to be in the corner of my closet. There's enough space for me to fit the jars and a fruiting chamber (I won't need to use an incubator). I've never grown mushrooms. My questions are:

1. Is contamination of big factor of growing mushrooms? Do they get contaminated very easily?
2. There are many clothes in my closet, but I'll brush some off to the side so they're not right next to my setup. With clothes in the room and near the jars/fruiting chamber, will my mushrooms get contaminated easily?
3. A week in advance of growing them, should I continuously spray Lysol to disinfect?

I was thinking of putting the jars in a seal-able box so they're not just wide out in the open. Please help me out!!

- Yes, and yes if you are not careful and no if you take the steps required to better insure 100% sterilization.

-Why won't you need to use an incubator?

2.will my mushrooms get contaminated easily?

- That all depends, you should provide a little more information.  I find it difficult to contam them.

3. A week in advance of growing them, should I continuously spray Lysol to disinfect?

- Could'nt hurt.

-What method are you using for your jars, pf? grains? etc.

I already have a good and steady temperature in my house so I won't need an incubator. I'm using the tek on this site, simple minds one.

It is a big factor, yes. The surest way to contaminate a substrate is to touch it with anything that has not been sterilized directly. Dirty hands, spoon, needle...

>With clothes in the room and near the jars/fruiting chamber, will my mushrooms get contaminated easily?

More easily than if you hadn't had those there, that's for sure. How easy...hard to tell.

>A week in advance of growing them, should I continuously spray Lysol to disinfect?

I don't think this would change anything much.

I was thinking of putting the jars in a seal-able box so they're not just wide out in the open.

As long you open this box at least every couple of days, this sounds ok. Or you could let the jars colonize in a fruiting chamber(plastic box with holes filled with polyfil)
