PF - Tek / Re: Pressure Cooker
January 23, 2010, 02:57:17 PM
I have instructions that came with my pressure cooker that states cooking on a lower psi would be sufficient if there is an increase in cook time. These variables depend on altitude mostly. But to sterilize something you must reach a 180 degree temperature. At any pressure you cook at you will more than reach 180 degrees.

15/3=5
90/3=30

If you cook for an hour on 15psi, substitute the pressure for an increased time. For those of you that follow my logic, 90 minutes or perhaps a little less even should be sufficient.

I think I'm gonna whip out my ol' wide mouth jars and do a case of cakes too. It's been a while.  ^_^

Damn, I said the same thing

Haha, two day is too quick to jump the gun on failure. I'm surprised your B+ didn't show first signs.

The best way to grow in my opinion if you have limited or no experience in mushroom growing is the PF-Tek method. It is the easiest way to grow and harvest mushrooms without too much complication. You don't have to worry about contaminating a casing and you can just fruit right out of your cake. Open up a new window and go to FungiFun.org and click on the video link. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and find the words ''Mushroom Growing Made Easy''. They explain the techniques for both PF-Tek and whole grain growing, and how to keep from contaminating your crop. I recommend paying closer attention to the PF-Tek parts of the video but then again with enough research you can successfully do either.
Good luck with your first grow.

It looks like that cobweb mold I usually get on my half ass casings, but I could be wrong.

When I dry I just lay out my babies out on a fold out table on wax paper and run my dehumidifier and small space heater, about a day and a half later everyone is dry.

With the casing layer constantly being moist and the covers on, it tends to stay at a pretty high humidity all the time. 94-97 on testing, never a real variation from there. Lately the pan method I have been using is falling victim to contamination (which up until recently has never happened to this degree), so I think I am switching my fruiting pan method to a technique I saw DavieK using in his grow setup. Clear lidded containers with polyfil air holes to accommodate FAE and to house my pans. Then just put the containers on my shelf unit and fruit from there. I think my new dog is in part responsible for the amount of competitor mold in my house.

In any case if anyone has a better idea, let me know, other then that I am at a loss for them.

Spray down the room with Lysol, and open the lids. Kind of high maintenance but I'm around a lot. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I notice the rhizomorphic formations getting weaker every time it re-matures...
I have another problem. My casings are being colonized slower than usual and a couple of the pans have some competition already and the first flush hasn't even come yet. The temp has been averaging 69 degrees which I know is a little low, but could this be the cause of my new problem. I am working in a pretty clean area too...

Saving your project is up to you, a great deal of research and common sense are the best tools one could have in this hobby. But, one thing that did pop out at me is when you said you had four month old syringes... I hope you kept them in a clean container and refrigerated them, they do tend to go bad.
If you did your second PF Tek the exact same as how you did your first successful batch, then the spores may be the culprit in this failure. But at the same time you may not have failed at all, spores can be whores. They have taken up to a week and a half to show any signs of growth for me at times....

How long do you think I can get away with shaking the grain before it runs out of juice to keep re-colonizing?
#53
I have about 3 quarts of fully colonized grain sitting next to my fruiting shelf in a pan that I decided not to case. I can't keep the culture alive now cus it's too late for a GTG transfer, it's been exposed to open air with a large surface area. I also can't introduce it to pasteurized straw cus I simply don't have the access to it. I don't have room in my fridge to simply freeze the growth so preservation is out of the question as well. I guess my dilemma is that this stuff produced like a champ and I don't wanna waste it, I just have no room in my usual spots. What does one do with a pan full of mycelium that he can't case?

Well if you say that you had some of your jars colonize, and some didn't, but it was from the same syringe, perhaps you weren't careful and didn't make it through your dry verm layer. I have run into that problem before oh so long ago. In that case there is nothing you can do.

Good work   ^_^ I still have 5 days and a fair amount of mycelium breaking through the casing. I might Be in the clear...

My favorite recipe around Christmas time are my ''Space Pretzels''.

1)White Chocolate melted in a pot with a few drops of peppermint extract added.

2)Let Chocolate cool in the pot, but make sure it doesn't thicken back up.

3)Add dry ground caps from your favorite mushroom strand, I usually put about 5 grams powder for every cup of Chocolate.

4)Dip your pretzel sticks in and add sprinkles before cooling in the fridge if you want.

It was a few years ago that I wanted to do something fun and festive for the holidays, so I made this recipe. If you don't have a super tolerance 3-4 of those babies will get you goin pretty good. It's a nice treat for friends that come over that don't shroom that much, haha make sure you tell them what's in them...

Haha, be careful with those Amanitas, they have been known to be responsible for liver failure on first use. Of course I imagine these doses were quite large...

Is there still no tek to grow Fly's domestically?
