4) I humidify the tank using perlite. I forgot to put some aluminium underneed. When i moved the cakes i got quite a lot of new mycelium growth (see first post) which also moved into the perlite, meaning that there is now a layer of about 1 cm of perlite attached to the cakes. Is this a problem? Should i scrape i of before the next dunk and roll?
I would put on a pair of clean, clean gloves and lift the cakes up and put the clean, clean, clean (alcohol wiped) foil underneath. You want to stop mycelial growth and have them put all their energy into fruiting. My 2 cents.

  There is wiggle room in all these techniques that will allow you to enjoy a healthy flush. There is no single, right, God-given path to the best of all worlds. If you want to know what will work best in the FC then get a RH (relative humidity) digital instrument. That will give you accurate information about the environment you've created and you can experiment with ways to keep that environment ideal. As long as you keep everything clean and you have fully colonized cakes and  you follow a TEK_ you will get mushrooms. Besides, who are we kidding, since these are your babies you will be checking on them every chance you've got. That's why an FC with a clear top is nice, you can check without disturbing anything. Take some pics. Have fun.

What strain are you trying to "study"? My attempts at growing azurescens has yet to yield success (or failure) the spores seem to grow very slowly. With others, B+ and Malabar, the mycelium shows up within a week. Try keeping them in a warmer, dark space. And yes contaminants are themselves a growth and it will be clear if they get going in your medium.

 All of the spore syringes from Earthstongue are put in a proprietary solution that is black. That is the only company I've ordered from so I don't know what other products look like. As you stated, the key is patience ( and the standards of care in set out in the TEKs.)

My first introduction to growing was with this book http://www.amazon.com/Psilocybin-Mushroom-Handbook-Outdoor-Cultivation/dp/0932551718/ref=pd_bbs_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239716600&sr=8-3
They have a chapter or two on growing wood loving shrooms and have ideas on how to cultivate them long term. I've got a couple of jars inoculated that I"m waiting on. They are much slower growing than the B+ varieties. Where are you in the grow process?

Thanks for the replies. I do realize that this is an extremely subjective area i.e. what strains produce what states etc. But I'm also convinced that given relatively similar set and settings there are differences in the various strains of shrooms. So I invite everyone who has done two or more varieties to contrast and compare them for the rest of us here. So far, I've only done a couple of modest doses of B+. Has anyone experience with Malabar?
  Thanks

General topics / Favorite strains and why
April 11, 2009, 06:30:19 AM
Hello everyone. I am a newbie and am returning to using psychedelics after a many year hiatus. I've successfully grown and harvested about 70 dry grams of B+. I wanted to experiment around with low doses before doing a full dose in a wild and beautiful place in nature. There is still a lot of snow in the mountains and the lakes have not completely iced out yet_ long winter in this part of the North east.
My experience: 1st tried 1 gram and felt nothing. 5 days later 2.0 grams and did have a threshold experience: not hallucinations but a definite sense that I had altered my consciousness. Two days ago did 2.25 grams and it qualified as a trip to me, strong visuals and a distorted sense of amusement. I went for a walk and many of the trees were leaning in one direction from the ice storms we had this winter. I said aloud to myself " Trees can't vote with their feet." This struck me as the most hilarious factual statement of all time. So the dosage seems to be exponential rather than linear as the difference between 2 and 2.25 was large. I will use 3g when I do "the real thing".
My questions are what strains are people's favorites on this board? I've got a syringe of malabars and azurescens. The azzies are a long term project. Anyone had experiences with malabars that they can share? Mazatapecs are referred to as being {visual} what are other qualities of other strains. Faves and pans please.

Your intention to study the teks is a good one. Do that first. Yes you can get spores from dried mushrooms but probably not of the species you want to propagate. Do your homework and welcome.

good job. It can take a couple of weeks for the cakes to become completely colonized. It depends on temperatures. It's all listed in the tek. Pics when you think they are ready.

hum, given his name... I believe Doms take a vow of poverty, humility and service.
That said, it's easy to stick your foot in it when you get started on this forum. My first try was using the "improved" pftek offered in the book Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook Easy Indoor and Outdoor Cultivation[/i] by Nicholas and Ogame. I just got home from the city and harvested two very full jars. They don't suggest the dunk and roll method at all. I've certainly grown more than enough for my own use.
But I've found I'm enjoying the growing process more than I expected. good night all...

Wash in warm running water. If you need to do more than rinse, get a soft toothbrush and gently brush the debris away. If you let them dry the crap will dry too... 200 grams = well done.

You can get a new pressure cooker for under $30 on amazon. You can pay for it by substituting beans for beef in your diet. It will be the best investment you can make. BTW the pftek has both words and pictures. It is a master class in having success from the beginning. Take it.

 The secret ingredient to the pftek success is patience. With the first inoc it's really difficult to let the spores do their thing in the dark. I've had good luck so far and it is a fairly forgiving protocol. Keep your hands clean and don't check on progress more than every 3-4 days during the mycelium growth stage. Good luck and take pics.

I see lots of mushrooms all swirling around in fascinating patterns....
