Cultivation / strain isolation w/ pans
December 02, 2008, 05:01:36 PM

When isolating pan cultures on agar I don't see sectoring as with cubes.  What characteristics should  I be seeking?     In the past I always stuck the densest,  fastest growing myc.  but had less than stellar results come fruiting time.  Was this my choice of isolate or just my in-experience when growing pans?   Thanks for any help!

Cultivation / spawn to bulk
November 19, 2008, 04:26:57 PM
Three days ago I added grain spawn to pasteurized dung/straw.  It has become very stinky.  Sulfur like smell.  The sub was heated for 2 hrs @ 160 Is it normal for bulk subs to stink before the spawn run is complete?

Yes this is a great way to improve yield.  I would suggest using a antibiotic in your agar which can be found at Sporeworks.  If not, do more than 3 dishes per strain to account for loss due to contamination.  Look for the fastest growing, most rizomorphic (ropy) segment and transfor that.  Good luck

stick a thermometer on the lowest rack. see what it reads. I would GUESS that anything at or under 120 deg. is OK.  Mine doesn't get that hot.  Just hot enough to make the air dry.  The shrooms still take 8-10 hrs to dry.  So your dehydrator may be different than mine.

Go the X-tra mile and invest in a pressure cooker to insure success.  Down the road as you progress in this hobby you will be glad you did.  Make sure it has a pressure gauge and not just a weight.

What medium are you using to grow your spawn.  IE. Rhy, Millit ect.

I use a non adjustable heat dehydrator as well.  I keep the shrooms on the to tray and the vents all the way open.  I haven't noticed any reduction in potency.

Cultivation / caseing

Most of the caseing recipes in the tek and abroad are of the  non nutritive type.  I've been having success caseing with a mix of dung, straw, worm caseing, oyster shell and vermiculite.  Obviously nutritive.  Then a very thin layer of verm. on top of the mixture layer.  Are there disadvantages to this method?
