Cultivation / Re: Supa Cake

The tradeoff is between size and speed. The bigger the cake the slower the colonization and the more chance for contamination. I just had to dump two trays with trich. sux.

In the wild, mushrooms are used to tropical conditions. A cow paddy in Texas at noon is well over 100 degrees. You should be fine since you've adjusted the conditions to the more optimum range. It just may take a little longer. I had jars once that I placed directly on a heating pad and they stopped growing 1/2" from the bottom. Once I lifted them off and they cooled they completely filled the jar. So good luck and keep posting.

Peace. Practice peace. There's enough shit flying around the world already. Be generous and get over it.

Tough story. I'm sorry your room mate wasn't more understanding. The cakes probably picked up some air borne contaminants when they were exposed, even briefly. It's possible that the mushroom myc will finish growing out. It is certainly worth waiting and see what happens. I'm not sure why you bought tupperware instead of jars. I suspect that even if you are low on funds you could find a re-cycling center that would have empty jars you could use. Good luck and if this fails, just chalk it up to experience.

I had some that I stored in mason jars for a couple of months. It got contammed, or at least the trays I used it on turned green pretty quick. I would say if you have not used it in a couple of weeks you should nuke it in the microwave just to be sure. My 2 cents.

Fattrout,
Had a newbie moment when I sprinkled the print onto the agar. I had the HEPA on and when I unfolded the foil a good part of the print lifted up and blew onto the floor. Bummer. I figured it out eventually but you have to be careful of the wind.

Yeah two nice jars into the compost today. I nocced em up with my LC. It was fuzzy white with flecks of green. Have some more on the way. I'm also trying the agar plate method for the first time. They seem to have germinated now to let the myc grow nice and thick.

We all send our share to the compost pile. I think of it as my offering to the gods of mycelium. Good luck with your next attempt. In time, with persistence you will get the results you've been hoping for. I've been having great luck with TAK mountain from Ralphsters.

Cultivation / Short, Fat and Stumpy
December 23, 2009, 07:04:44 AM
In my most recent trays, the shrooms seem to be stumpier and thicker than any I've grown before. Is this a FAE issue? The strains are Taz and TAK Mt. I have cakes in the same FC and they seem to be producing normal looking fruits. Anyone?
And yeah I'll post a pic eventually, but short, fat and stumpy pretty much says it all.

texshroomer,
We all started there. Congrats on getting fruits. Keep going and you'll soon have more than enough (whatever enough might be for you).

The only possible problem with wood chips and sawdust is that they can be vectors for contaminants. It's not just the azurescens that love to feed on wood. there are all kinds of molds etc. that will consider it tasty. Vermiculite has no nutrient value and is safe as a way to hold moisture next to the cake.

Cultivation / Re: take foil off???

In the "Psilocybin Growers Handbook" it recommends two foil covers. One is solid and kept on when you PC. The other you puncture when you innoculate. I leave that one on. The small holes let it breathe okay and it is one more level of protection from air born contams. Others have more (and better) systems in their grow space and can do without the foil. Note: I still use the 1/2" verm layer on top.

Nice tray. I used to use aluminum bread pans and gave them up because the myc would eat through the bottom. I found some 'non-stick' pans on sale and have been very happy with those. A jar of popcorn fits in perfectly. Did you get your oyster shells at a hydroponics store? Keep posting pics please. I enjoy watching others progress.

ps: I have exactly followed fungifun's pf-tek description. Only that I have used white rice flour...
Whatever.
There are many routes to contamination, time is only one of them. There are many parameters to a good quality grow: numbers of fruits, number of flushes, size and density of fruits and yes, timeliness. That is why most of the growers on this forum have multiple projects at various stages of the process. Quickness is not that big a deal with more than one grow going at a time. Just sayin. Welcome to the forum and keep posting.

Cultivation / Re: Fruiting Chamber
December 17, 2009, 01:34:30 AM
Dub is right. Cardboard is used as a substrate for a variety of species of cubes. Get it out of your fruiting chamber, wipe it down with lysol, rinse and repeat. Buy some perlite or even better some hydroton pellets. You don't need to steepen the learning curve any more than it is naturally. Good luck.

Cultivation / Re: Popcorn results
December 16, 2009, 11:29:40 AM
Thanks everyone. I'm not sure what I have done differently that the results are so much stronger. I'm grateful nonetheless. The strain is TAK Mountain; a John Allen find from Thailand and available from Ralphs. I've had the best and most consistent results with that strain as a grower. Also, interestingly, it causes the white stones in my gravel driveway to light up from the inside on even low, "exploratory" doses.
