PF - Tek / Re: what to do with liquid colture
June 12, 2011, 03:13:37 PM
Break the mycelium cloud into pieces - hopefully you can shake the jar or stir it using a magnetic stirrer, however if not; you can suck up some of the liquid into a syringe than violently squirt it back in, having the needle be above the liquid level; this leads to bubbles and extreme turbulence which after several times can encourage the mycelium to break apart and be sucked up more easily.

You can use the liquid culture essentially just like you would a normal spore syringe in a PF take so I have been lead to believe.

Hi.

Quotequestions:
what substrate should i use for each of those mushrooms (ive seen people grow shitakes on cakes (pf ect)

1. Oyster is a good one for begginers, they can be grown on anything from the readily available pasturized newspaper, or coffee grounds. However, they probably do better on a sawdust block mixture.

2. White button is more difficult to grow, but still easily grown; they grow well on composted manures. They, unlike oyster or shiitake mushrooms are secondary decomposers instead of primary decomposers.

3. Shiitake grows well on sawdust blocks that have been sterilised, or in logs using shiitake dowels.

Personally I would make a sterilised mycobag of sawdust for the shiitake and oyster, than use 2-4ml of liquid culture media to inoculate them using good sterile technique. But you can use agar wedges, modified deli cups, and a pressure cooker to go about it as well - like I did in this image:
