Title: Advantages of stem butts?
Post by: oyster grower on May 03, 2011, 11:55:05 AM
Hello, I just started trying to grow oyster mushrooms (bought the Espresso Oyster kit from Stamets), and I had a question. In the manual it says that you can "leapfrog" the substrate to inoculate another batch about 3 times before contamination sets in. That was sort of disappointing because I would like to keep this kit growing longer.
However, I've been reading about using stem-butts to create mushroom spawn, and would this be a method that would allow me to keep cultivating spawn without worrying about contamination?
And if not, what are the advantages of cultivating with stem butts then?

That is a form of cloning. You would be taking the genetics from your chosen mushrooms.
