Title: Fruiting Chamber questions?!?!
Post by: FadedFungus on February 14, 2013, 03:53:22 AM
Here are a few questions I have been wondering about.  I have read a few conflicting answers to these problems so I was wondering if any of you smart cultivators could shed some light on this for me. Thank you for your time and input! -- Happy growing.

1)What are the temp ranges and humidity levels do you keep your F.C. at when fruiting?  (I've read about 4 conflicting theories on this)

2)Can I directly mist the cakes or should I just spray the walls and let it drip down?

3)I have a closet I can put these in....should I buy a humidifier and keep the ambient R.H. at 99?? ( I have the cakes on a layer of perlite and It seems to stay in the >85% range)

4)How important is Air exchange and CO2 levels to get the cakes to pin? What should I do to encourage pinning?

When I first started I was confused with all the contradictions too. I only did two SGFC's before switching to only monotub, but heres what I did:

1. I just fruit at room temp which is pretty steady at 70°F. With the misting, it would keep my RH in the 90's.

2. I never misted directly on the cakes, I always misted the walls. However, now using monotub, I'm sure dropletts of H2O fall from the lid on to the fruits and I've had no problems. You just dont want H2O to pool on the cakes.

3. I never used a humidifier. Seemed like a waste of money. RH should stay up from the misting.

4. FAE is important, I would manually mist and fan the FC with its lid 3 times a day.

Hope that helps! Good luck!

Those are all great answers..I was thinking along the same lines.   70F is what my room stays at all the time ..sometimes maybe jumps up to 74 depending on what Im doing... I am waiting on a reply from MoGrow and then I will put these cakes in my FC. I will keep you guys posted with pics...

1)What are the temp ranges and humidity levels do you keep your F.C. at when fruiting?  (I've read about 4 conflicting theories on this)

Room Temp here its between 65 - 75F, and im not sure about my RH, I used a hydrometer for the first grow but there fairly unreliable, if your SGFC is built to spec and your ambient RH is ~30+ your chaimber will stay at 90+ np, given you have 5-6" of damp perlite and your 6-12" off the wall.

2)Can I directly mist the cakes or should I just spray the walls and let it drip down?

I mist my cakes directly, tho i do it from about 6-12" above and outside the SGFC and i spray vertically so the water mists down on the cakes i dont spray at them, when im done misting my cakes and shroomies are glistening, then you need to fan for a min to fast track the evap process.

3)I have a closet I can put these in....should I buy a humidifier and keep the ambient R.H. at 99?? ( I have the cakes on a layer of perlite and It seems to stay in the >85% range)

Kind of answered in the first question but i wouldnt put them in a closet SGFC's are designed to work off the natural air currents in the room there in, theres not much air flow in a closet.

4)How important is Air exchange and CO2 levels to get the cakes to pin? What should I do to encourage pinning?

SGFC's require alot of this and its fairly important youll need to fan 5-6x a day and mist 3-4x

So I added the cakes to the F.C. and my temp is a nice 72F and 80-95% R.H. The cakes already started to blue within a few hours of placing them in the chamber....I'm a little nervous but Im goingto let them sit for 48 hours and see if they whiten back up.   (they all were completely white when I birthed them)  The light is on an automatic  12h on/off cycle.

I am misting them about 3/4 times a day and my RH is 75-99% but they are looking dry. My other cakes have come out of their casing jars looking much much healthier then these.   I'm taking the lid off twice a day and flushing the air.....   I should start to see pinning within 7-10 days?  This is the part that I always fail at.   I always get nice jars that colonize well but when I place them in the F.C. they just fall to shit.....

Hmmm. I see a pic where it looks like you did a dunk, so they should be hydrated. Is the room super dry, or is there a fsn of some sort running in the room?

1st you need get that off the floor you need to let air come in through the holes in the bottom if not your perlite cant function properly.

you need to fan more often i fan mine 4+ times a day and i still see slight signs of aerial mycelium.
Evaporation off your substrate is a major pinning trigger.

P.S. 90% off all household contaminate spores are within 12" of the floor.

So I've started to have some success.  I will post some pictures later.  Here is what happened.  I put my fully colonized jars in my F.C. ( as you can see above, they where completely white inside and out.)  but I didn't have room in my F.C. for every cake so I left a few in the jar.  Well my F.C. cakes didn't do well so I said F this sh!t.....I forgot about about the jars in my closet.  I came home from work and looked at them...to my astonishment they were covered in tons of little to medium sized pins....So today at I will transfer them to my F.C. and try these.  Pics to come.

I've used my cakes twice, cleaned them to start over again, and two of them are rapidly turning white. I assume it's mycelium, but what should I do? Leave them in with the other cakes? Will mushrooms grow on such cakes?

So here are some pics of my (pathetic) harvest. My original cakes never produced pins and I didn't have room for about 5 cakes in the F.C. so I left them in my closet.  I gave up on the project and to my surprise the jars in my closet formed pins.  They were distressed when I birthed them but I was able to nurture them back to health.  As you can see I have about 5 shrooms from about 20 jars I colonized. Those results are horrible. So here are a few questions...
1) How do I induce pinning.? (I lowered the CO2 levels and raised the O2.)
2) In a perfect situation I should pick the shrooms right when I caps open. Not when they are fully mature correct?
3) Are the stalks safe for ingestion or only the caps? (I've never eaten the stalks but some people have)

DJP PA- You should have posted your question on a new thread...which I see you did.  This is a conversation about a specific topic and if you want to join this conversation you are more then welcome to but If you have you something else to discuss then you should should have done in your thread...and only your thread.

Yep, its all good to eat the stipes. I only did cakes once and failed lol. I've done several mono's though... You should consider it. MoGrow will prob be nack in a couple days with some cake answers...
You got results, so thats a good thing! Enjoy the fruits of your labour!

1.) put em back in the chamber and continue misting and fanning as usual.
2.) yes unless you want to print then youll want to let the caps plane out.
3.) yes there most of your weight and are made up of the same thing your caps and mycelium are.

When you're doing cakes like that, you need to have your rh as close to %100 as possible at all times. Since you're using a shotgun FC (with too many holes I might add), don't fan so frequently. That's lowering your rh and by the time it reaches more optimal levels you're coming back to fan it all away again, it's like an endless cycle of never achieving/maintaining your rH.

Suggestion: Get an airstone and water pump. Add more perlite, so you have 3-4 inches in total, then add 1/2 or so of water, submerge airstone under the perlite.

Also, if you lay the cakes on tinfoil squares, spores wont drop all over your perlite and dirty it up.

Thanks for the advice.  This is an old post with my old F.C.  I made a new one using the air stone and 5 inches of stone to rest the cakes on.  It's been great and I'm having much better yields.

Hi, I'm a noob, on my second grow now with golden teachers, my first grow was with Ecuador strain(4 syringes), I used the pf tek, I must've gotten my subtrate mixture ratio wrong cause it took forever to colonize and I didn't even notice pins at all, had "in vitro" going basically, with massive 1 or 2 shrooms growing in the whiskey glasses after 7 weeks of innoculating.I only birthed them 2 weeks later, and some didn't have any signs of growth at all, anyway, i birthed  eventually and received shrooms for 8 weeks whilst in fruiting chamber, amounting to 300g fresh weight. Is this normal?I thought I would get 10g dry weight per cake?they were extremely visual and potent though...I had 4 syringes and basically innoculated 10 glasses per syringe, 10 of which didn't even start to colonize, and 9 more colonized in patches then just stopped(threw away 19 glasses). So I only birthed 21 cakes and got that 300g in fresh weight.

Now with my teacher strain they colonized beautifully in a quick manner, I improved my substrate ratio by mixing per glass, opposed to mixing one huge batch and filling each glass as previously done with ecuador.I birthed 12 after 6weeks 3 days of innoculation, they've been sitting in FC for 7 days and only seeing 1 cake with about 6 tiny shrooms growing now, they are in a SGFC with an inch of perlite, I mist once in the morning, once at night, and fan bout 3 times a day. I dunked and rolled before I birthed them, so the mycellium is growing over the dry verm now and not seeing much growth.Am I just being impatient?

I've been trying different methods of heating whilst in incubation, first I just kept it above my fridge and was getting an average of about 24C( but it fluctuated a lot from night to day), then I got a reptile pad and got the temp to 28C(constantly but was worried I was putting too much heat to the bottom of the glass),I can't heat all my glasses like that(cause I have too many), so I got a fish tank heater and placed it in a shallow plastic container with water, I set the temp to 28C and placed the glasses directly in the water, I don't see why I have to put the heater in a tote of water, then put another tote on top that with the glasses in a dry tote, anyway, so mine are in the water and they colonizing fine.

could I just get some feedback on this please. I've read way too much contradicting stuff as it is
