Cultivation / Check out my drying setup
November 07, 2010, 02:25:06 PM
Ok so here I got two pics of my setup.

materials: Plastic container, desiccant, aluminum tray, drying rack, ceiling fan.

So I pretty much just harvested these guys, and placed them on this here rack over some desiccant.  The container is open and has no lid covering it.

What you can't see is the ceiling fan above running on high and the cuts + holes I put into the aluminum tray to let the water fall through.

and yea I plan to leave them like this for 24-48 hrs.

This is my first time drying my harvest, normally I always chew em fresh but I've grown more than I can eat in one sitting so..  here I am. lol

Those of you pros out there, can you tell me what you think?  Is this effective or not? All thoughts and comments welcome!

PF - Tek / which side up is best?
October 25, 2010, 05:10:56 PM
Here's a question for those who knows!

So when you have your cakes birthed and dunked which way do you place them in your fruiting chamber?  Lid side up (original orientating) or bottom side up as the base is always more densely colonized unlike to top near the lid.  Or hell has anyone placed it on its side?  I have seen people do it either way, but which way is best and why?

again,  lid side facing up \_/  ...... or bottom side up / \

PF - Tek / Alternatives to BRF?
October 03, 2010, 06:53:54 PM
Hey everyone,

I am going to be growing a new batch using the pf-tek and I have always use organic brown rice flower as the food for the myc. and I was wondering if any of you have ever experimented with other foods either mixing it to the BRF or replacing it with an alternative.
So if any of you have come up with any cool alternatives that help getting a better yield then share your info here. :D

Cultivation / Casing question help
September 30, 2010, 06:30:33 AM
Hi there,
so I tried to do a casing mix this time for my magic, but I have run into problems....  Let me explain.  I first made my jars etc and they grew fine, a little slow but ok.  Then once the time was right I put them into my casing mix and into the incubator, now they have been in the incubator for nearly a month.  They now seem to be growing very very slowly and I don't know why!  A few of the cakes from what I can see through the bottom of my plastic tray have grown well but others very little.  I'm not sure if its my casing, or temp. or what...  I can see a few places where the myc has grown a little on the top but its pretty weak.  These are B+ which I have done before and they grew much faster and stronger than this... Maybe I have a bad strain, I'm not sure...
I don't know if I should keep them in the incubator and maybe raise the temp or try and get them to start pinning.

any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you have a question for me please ask.

Thanks and peace

General topics / Anyone know a good dosage calculator?
November 12, 2008, 11:36:46 PM
So I'm just looking to find correct dosage numbers...    atm I'm working with B+, and Amazonian... the B+ will be ready for flush#1 pretty soon, the Amazonian seems to be working but is slow. These B+ grow freakin fast too....

But to the point if I could get some help with dosage that'd be great. It's not my 1st time taking, and I'd like it to be fairly heavy.

Thanks for any help. peace.

General topics / Will this work? PC
October 20, 2008, 06:06:43 PM
Ok so here's my idea, I use the half pint jars for making my cakes, and I want to try a different way for sterilizing.  Just tell me if this would work or not.

I take the jar fill it with the verm mix, then I screw on the lid, and already fit the lids with the poly filter, then wrap the jar in aluminum foil. Then into the pressure cooker.  This way I avoid having to expose the jars to the air after they come out the PC. (I normally just use an aluminum foil lid for the jars in the PC then when they come out I replace the foil with a poly fill lid followed by inoculation.....So... will using these pre-poly filter lids inside the pressure cooker be ok if wrapped well in foil?

Cultivation / Myc fight back?
October 19, 2008, 02:22:53 PM
Hey there, I am having a small problem with a contamination during the incubation.  It starts out black and gooey looking growing in-between injection sites.  I'm using the PF-tek with my own small changes, and anyways, One of my jars got this stuff in it so I removed it from the other jars and let it sit on a shelf at room temp (just wanted to see how what would happen)..but now I have another jar that looks like it might be getting this same thing..... Now my question is, is it possible for the Myc to fight back and overgrow the contam, and have the myc and shrooms from then on be "clean".
I read of someone else's growing journal and they were claimed that it was possible, but I'm not completely convinced.  I have though seen the Myc is the 2 contam jars begin to over take the contam areas. View pics.

In this pic the Black spot used to go all the way down the side of the jar and now it does not.

and in this pic the black contam used to cover the entire base, but as you can see the Myc is pushing.

So... say I've got another jar with small pockets of this black stuff, but I leave it in the incubator so the Myc can continue to grow at its preferred environment (the environment change does not seem to effect the black contam) and...the Myc continues to grow and eventually meets the black spots then ... perhaps the myc over takes the contam completely. I don't know, guess I'll find out one way or another, but if it does, does that mean the cake is good and clean to use for fruiting?

All help with this is greatly appreciated.

PF - Tek / Contamination after birth?
October 08, 2008, 12:05:09 PM
I don't really see the point...  Is it bad taste to ask a similar question associated with a current thread?  If so, I apologize.  I thought you'd prefer me asking a related question in an already existing thread.  Doesn't make a difference to me, I just want your mycological guidance Baph. :)

Hey I've got a question.  Once a jar is birthed, I know that I need to microwave some verm and then dunk the cakes for 12-24 hrs like Baph suggests, and then place them in my fruiting chamber w/ the damp perlite etc. My question is that once birthed do I simply not have to worry that much about my cakes getting contaminated?  I don't understand what keeps the cakes "clean" when we're washing, dunking, and handling these cakes. And also what keeps them "safe" when they are fruiting?

PF - Tek / Polyfil question
August 25, 2008, 06:12:57 PM
Hey so I was planning on using polyfil as shown:

http://www.fungifun.org/English/Polyfil

but I'm not sure about brands or if there is a specific type or whatever and the links on that page above don't work anymore.  Can you tell me if this stuff linked below would be ok?

Thanks for the help.

General topics / Picking question.
August 16, 2008, 09:36:17 PM
Ok so I went out and picked some shrooms, I put them inside 3 ziplock bags then into the frig....  Now its been 9 days... Are they still ok to eat?  They do look a little wilted but I'd like some more experienced feedback if you guys think they'd be fine or not.

...and I would have eaten them sooner but I just wasn't able to have the time.

Thanks.

PF - Tek / In search of help and advice.
July 15, 2008, 05:45:06 PM
Hi there,

Ok I'm just going to tell exactly what I have done thus far and you tell me if I've done anything wrong or w/e please just tell me.

So I followed the PF-Tek almost exactly.  Prepared the substrate correctly, pressure cooked the jars for 45 -50 min. and waited about 6 - 7 hours to cool.  Followed this by sterilizing my work station etc... Now instead of using foil as a lid (I used Kerr Wide mouth 1/2 pint jars) and I punched 4 holes on each lid for inoculation.  For sterilizing I used a simple lighter and rubbing alcohol on the needle.....  After inoculation I put a piece of aluminum foil over the lids. I then placed the jars into my incubator. I have a little thermometer inside to read the air temp. and its around 80-85 F.... ok after waiting maybe 11 days I chose to take off the Jar lids and replaced them with a new piece of foil. (so now there are 2 layers of foil acting as a lid) I did this simply because I did some research and found that better air circulation can speed up myc growth. Although it has its cons too but thats a different topic.

Ok so now its been 4 days after I did the lid swap.  I have little to no growth of myc in any of my jars. I have 12. I'm just wondering if I did something wrong or perhaps I'm simply being impatient, either way I'd just like some help.

If I have been unclear about anything just name the specific and I'll post back with a more detailed answer.

Thanks and peace.

General topics / To Case or not to Case?
July 03, 2008, 11:55:32 AM
Hi there,

I'm following the PF-tek and my babies are still trying to colonize their jars.

But anyways, I am curious to know what the pro's and con's are of casing.  I was originally planning on just using a normal fruiting chamber on wet perlite etc...  But now I see more peopling talking about casing.  I know how to case for the most part and if I find gray areas I'm sure I can look it up. I just want to know what casing or not casing does on the biological level. Thanks!
