PF - Tek / pf tek experiment - replication
August 21, 2007, 07:13:09 AM
To see if my previous experiment could be replicatedand, prepared were 4 pint jars using pf tek and brf.

1 jar was prepared following directions of tek as closely and accurately as possible - with the exception of using fine verm as I never was able
      to locate medium
3 jars were prepared according to tek modified by a mixture of approx 50% fine verm, and 50% crushed cob with BRF increased x 50% for added
nutrients and "bonding agent" for cob.
Inoculation was made with spore syringe from own spore print using about 2.5 cc per pint jar.

After 2 days following innoc, growth was seen in 3 of 4 jars.
    After 7 days, 3 o4 4 jars show approx 30% colonization.
1 jar prepared according to tek without cob or increase of brf still shows no signs of growth.

If all proceeds as before in experiment and fruits are once again harvested, this will provide an alternate method to pf tek.

IMO, when using fine verm with pf tek, correct water content is more difficult to determine and achieve.  Fine verm also tends to "pack" more so than medium grade verm and therefore must be the cause for my inability to successfully produce mycelium growth using tek in conjunction with fine verm.

I finally found a place in FW (2 hrs away) that carried the coir and drove there to pick me some up .  Called first to confirm they carried it and had some and was told yes.  Drove up there that day, got there, no coir! The who I spoke to on the phone said, "Ah dude, the truck should be here any minute, we figured he'd get here before you, blah, blah, blah."
Boy was I pissed!!!  4 hrs on the road for notta, zilch, zero!  Decided I don't need it anymore unless I try some tek that adamantly calls for it.

Will give a try.  Thanks anno!

I ran across this post tonight from another site's forum. I've read this before - when I first began a couple of months ago and was not having any luck with my cakes and was getting pretty damn discouraged.  It came from a thread to a reply from another thread, etc. and  popped up in another post - again.  Thought I'd send if for nothing else, some amusement, but it does have a link to a complete tek using rye.  So, for what it's worth, here ya go.

Quote:
"My 1st successful grow was rye spawned to poo,Why pf tek is recommended for beginners is beyond me,1st you have impossible to find ingredients than sitting there with the god forsaken coffee grinder till your thumb falls off, fanning, misting, air stones, bubble wands, pumps and tubing and blah blah blah blah. And them when you are lucky enough to get it right the payoff of your success(If you can call it that with a straight face)Is a few measly mushrooms for all your hard work. Why do people keep playing this practical joke on the newbies,Its a terrible thing to do to them,I remember what it was like to be them because it wasn't that long ago that I couldn't grow anything no matter how hard I tried.I don't know if it is just that the people who recommend it don't remember how hard this is when you 1st start and you are struggling but I sure remember and for everyone I help convince not to make themselves go through that nightmare I think that may be one person who may stick with this hobby and have a good harvest and enjoy them self and not say this isn't worth it and give up after being so horribly disappointed by what the get out of all their hard work. The work for payoff ratio for pf tek is like driving 500 miles to work all day for minimum wage,.  in other words ITS NOT WORTH IT!!!  Here you go http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post4577994
My favorite tek on the shroomery,I promise you will never go back to useless cakes,As a matter of fact you can go and put your half pint jars in your car now to throw at peoples windshields when they piss you off in traffic cause I assure you they will be under the thickest layer of dust ever cause you will never touch them again Good luck"
End Quote

A lot of good information from this guys tek using rye.  He can grow some shrooms I'm here to tell ya!!

Has anyone used any of the extraction methods?        I'm currently trying the Everlear method and was curious to if anyone had tried this and the success of it or any of the other methods.

Thx,

Yes, aborts are supposed to be more potent - I also have read this in posts and other various places as well.

Here's 1 post from another forum that discusses aborts.

"right on saney, i've got 2oz of dried PF abhorts. they are my prize.
i didn't want to say it, but with PF it's like 70% abhort. the interesting thing though is that the ones that do grow almost equal B+ in quantity. it's just that with PF you get to see so many abhorts."

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with any of the comments made by the poster,  this is only an example of many, many more such posts that all say aborts are more potent - therefore why I save mine and will extract the alkaloids when enough are gathered.

these are golden teachers.  my next "big tub" will be B+ but just got my first flush from a small tray and made my first syring from one so, it's gonna be a few weeks before it starts producing. am hoping to get same or better results.

Heres a link that kinda follows this tek used for grains or cakes which describes the crumbling.
I'm no expert, but I crumbled mine for two reasons.

1. did not use wide mouth jars and had to "dig" out the sub.
2. spawned one jar to hay and cow shit and then cased  and the other to the casing mix

Crumbling will work but is it necessary?  Probably not, I had no other options tho.  I should have been clearer on that part, my bad ;(

It does work well, doesn't it?  Did you use any calc carb (limestone flour) with it?

Although it's a tek for casing cakes, you can case colonized wbs with it and/ or case your wbs that hs been spawned to straw / manure.

EXACTLY, which tek ya want a link for?

Yes, I've found this to be true as well.  I store mine separately and am saving up all my aborts for just the right occasion!!

Well my experiment actually worked!!  As I was unable to get any type growth from my first attempt using fine verm in the pf tek -brf cakes, I tried a second time several weeks ago using crushed cob mixed at a 1:3 ratio with the fine verm.

I used the only solution left from my B+ syringe in one jar and as I had a little sub left over, I used a smaller jar and inno'd with GT.  It took a L O N G time for both jars to fully colonize, but when done I crumbled up the cake and then put in trays.  Here's what I got.

This is B+

and

these are the GT's.

The first two trays were spawned to straw / manure and cased with 60,30,10.   In the last two trays (1) was cased with 60,30,10 mix, the other (1), one that has the broken veils, spawned to same mix with some straw and manure mixed in and then cased.   The one on rt with straw/manure mix fruited quicker than the other.

All 4 trays show fairly good pinning and coverage and overall I'd say experiment was sucessfull.

I'd been told to expect bigger fruits from 2nd flush, but NEVER did imagine anything like this!!  Here's a pic of a couple of the biggest MONSTERS.

Beside the fact I was late harvesting, outta town & unavoidable, is there anything wrong with these size shrooms??

peace out all,

Not really.  You sterlize your wbs with pressure cooker - a must - and you pasturize substrate on stove in pan if using starw and cow shit or you can use the 60,30,10 and ity works well also.  You can fruit directly from container / tub and don't need a fc.  My first batch bulk tub took from July 2 (innoculation of jars) to August 8 for first flush.  I also did a small tray and used the 60,30,10 mix as substrate and casing and had my first flush in about 4 weeks from start to finish.  Again, IMO, grains are the only way to go!!

Peace out!

Dude - try grains.  so much easier, IMO, less forgiving.  Take a look at the MONSTERS I got from second flush!!  This ws my VERY FIRST attempt at growing!! (Other than tryin' the pf brf cakes that did not work).
