what about the slimey brown things hanging off the one in the first pic. I thought mabey it was pins gone rotten or mabey MYC that got wet and funky.

Warrior dude,
they won't fruit a first time, taking a long time. so dunking now will ruin them?
they puffed up quite quickly(within one week). now seems as if they have stopped or just going way slow (three weeks now an all are not fully fuzzed). I keep reading over my info, not finding out what I need to be doing.
not much activity.

I'm using the energy saving 13w =60w fluorescent bulbs. with my work schedule and all I leave it on for several hours either day or night. I fan two to three times per day.

does light and fanning need to be consistent or on a schedule?( the same time each day or night)?

thanx for the input

Cultivation / Dead mycellium???
July 31, 2007, 06:56:30 PM
could use some input, like for reals.

How can I tell if the cakes are dying? the myc not looking too good on the cakes in the tub with holes tek. it looks like the myc has gone flat or something, not good white color anymore.

they started out real good. now lookin kinda sickly. gunna be sad to waste a dozen cakes.

I have a few other cakes in a plain dark dark blue tub with wire mesh over perlite and
covered the top with saran wrap which I fan out three times per day and spray the sides.  and very small light about two feet above for approx. 6-8 hours/daily. don't know what the RH is but still lookin good. almost two weeks now and cakes are not fully covered with fuzz.

dude, the light is a clear one, not very bright. same size as the ones in a string of Christmas lights, only one because the tubs are in the basement, no other light is available, like sunlight.

If I move em upstairs there will be daylight for most of the day. Is that not too much light?

also it looks like the mycellium is dying or loosing it's whiteness on the cakes in the tub with holes TEK. When to initiate pinning?

Yes, I am covering up some of the holes with wrapped saran wrap (half width) around the sides.

The holes are 1/4 or 5/16, but there is a helluva lot of em in sides, top and bottom.

How bout the light? C-5 clear the size of exterior christmas light bulbs, night lite etc. Should it be a grow or blue light better?

Can the cakes be too wet? 100% is just that,,, wet.

let me know and I'll adjust.

thanx, "power to the TEK"

I don't know what the exact RH is for sure, I calibrated it. One batch is in a tub with holes, per video and if the hygrometer is correct, humidity goes lower to @ 80-85 (?) than if I have plastic wrap around the sides covering some of the holes. that takes it up to 90 RH or so. Up and down so I taped a lot of the holes.

another batch is in a plain dark tub with saran cover. these cakes are fuzzing faster and whiter but I need to fan it out. the room is at @ 78-80 degrees and I have a c-5 clear night light bulb about 3 feet above both tubs for several hours per day.

Not much progress than seen in the pics I sent with "How bout now pics" earlier in the forum.in the clear tub and the fuzz is not looking so white now. some perfectly round little tiny water drops are stuck to the side of at least one cake.

well, I didn't read anything and the video didn't explain, so I "assumed" dunking was good to rinse anything potentially problematic and give a fresh drink, and rolling, I think it's to help keep moisture in and contams out.

what I am seeing is a lot of white fuzzy growing through them at a pretty good rate.

I dunked and didn't roll a batch of few and into a tub (no holes) with saran cover and the white fuzz is growing at a faster rate than those I did dunk and roll and put into the holy tub.

all going nicely, I hope.

anyone, jump in anytime to correct or verify.

I may have packed em jest a little tight but not much, shook em a little to level off the substrate.

yea there were a few droplets in jars.

I birthed em and the brown spots (in earlier pics I sent) look to be mushkies that were growing against the side of the jar. kinda smooth and slickery. they smell like fresh shrooms, kinda of musty, good.(the cakes that is)

I think I could have birthed em possibly a couple of weeks ago, is all. Hope they still fruit up some goodies.

Cultivation / light on the subject
July 22, 2007, 10:13:48 PM
at what point is light introduced to PF cakes after being put into the FC on damp perlite (with hole all over all 6 sides)

Is the energy saving fluorescent light sufficient? I think 13 watts produces 60 watts of light. and several hours per day?

does that also go for the tub tek without holes where fanning and wetting?

Oh, but I must have put the torque on cuz those lids are tight! even with the seal side up. I don't think they were breathing properly taking a lot of time to colonize.(???)
more than two months.

Is that what is mentioned in the TEK when the breathable medical or sports tape is used? to cover the holes.

I guess the only thing would be is that you could watch and see more of the growing process? by taping the holes getting rid of the foil.

thanx, peace.
