Cultivation / Re: Contamination Prevention

In Paul Stamet's Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms he recommends using a 1:100 dilution of 3% peroxide as a cleaning agent.  I've used it numerous times and it seems to work just fine.  The only problem with peroxide is fungal mycelium resists it, so if there is any molds growing it might not be completely killed.

Cultivation / do you have a myspace account?

Sorry about the quick endorsement, but I have a group on myspace called The Mushroom Resource that lists fungifun.org and other cultivation sites so that cultivators can find lots of information on various techniques.   The group site is http://groups.myspace.com/themushroomresource.

I don't want to encourage anyone to leave this forum in favor of another one, but if you are looking for some other web sites with different information and opinions and have a myspace account feel free to join up.

Cultivation / Re: Best Disinfectant: ETHANOL?

This might be a little late for you, but I was researching this about a month ago and posted this elsewhere:

According to a Chemical Disinfection Summary I saw at work alcohols (ethanol, isopropyl alcohol) have a variable effect against some bacterial and fungal species and is ineffective against spores. Chlorine Compounds (bleach) however provides good penetration and quick microbial kill. It is corrosive to metals, and has some sporicidal activity.

I still use 70% ethanol at times with my glassware and equipment since I don't want to corrode my metal equipment, but since it won't kill contaminating spores (which I have a ton of) I throw everything I've got into the dishwasher between uses.
