Cultivation / Re: Patiance....my first grow!
October 30, 2008, 11:20:55 AM
Well it's been about a week and im starting to c mycelium growth in multiple spots.  I will post some pics soon, when they develop a little more.  And man the Hawaiian strain does take a loooooooong time to get going.  I should just start 1 of my other strains and i might be eating them by the time my jars develop lol.

I used prob the same 1 u got with a little mix of another.  Mostly followed the Doc's Wild Bird Seed Tek but took a little points out of the one baph provided 4 me also...

Anyway here r the links

p.s. what i did diffrent in the Doc's WBS is put the wbs on a towel to dry off a bit like it said to do in the other 1 and also i kept the wbs in water longer than doc's (like the other 1 at MYWhat? said)

a hydrometer is like a thermometer but it measures humidity instead of temperture and its a must in this craft.  And no they r not 2 expensive, i got mine for a little over 20$ but they have a lot cheaper 1's.  mine shows both temp and humidity.

Nice pics....I didn't see any growing methods using BRF Cakes.

looks like you get more shrooms from the way your growing it.

I'm thinkin of switchin up methods.

lol... thats exactly what i thought.  I was going to do cakes but figured grains cant be much more difficult, im just as sterile as possible.  My first time and im doing wbs substrate and eventually case with Vermeculite and peat moss.  I would rather do rye  but wbs just ALOT easier to come by.

BTW! very nice baph.  Looks like u have a nice set up there, i hope to do it soon also.  A martha stewart setup (simple and small) with all the perks.  But for now its 1 tray at a time and big dreams.  Very nice Mushies and that 1 was HUGE!

Your cake/s are fine.
Those are metabolites and are quite common.
Cobweb is not harmful and mushies can be ate from trays the have had cobweb.

There is a trick to cobweb if you catch it early enough.
H2O2,aka Hydrogen Peroxide, just buy a bottle like they sell at any drug store and screw a spray nozzle on it and spray.
Cobweb will kinda melt away on contact with H2O2.

cool baph, im going to keep that in mind!! very useful tip!

yea im just waiting, i know its just been a few days.  I got rid of the water heater setup (my water heatrer broke) so im just going to leave it alone.  I still have 3 other strains so im going to start a couple more jars in the next few days... Its ok, still fun and exciting growing for the first time

... I still have a little hawaiian strain left btw (like 4cc) just in case i messed somthing up.  -_-

well my temp isn't constant the whole time but it is mostly (somewhere between 75 and 82).  Its in a bin and got the whole water heater set up but not to fund of it.  As for humidity, thats irrelevant in colonization, thats important after birthing (maybe during).

well, I started my grow and i will post updates here.  When i get action or concerns ill post up pics but anyway its the Hawaiian strain on a WBS substrate.

As of now,i have a little concern as there nothing happening yet lol... I inuculated Thursday evening/night and nothing.  im being patiant and will start some new jars with a difrent strain at the end of this week if nothing happens.

I know a member here said he had trouble (very slow colizination) with hawaiian strain, can that be it?  I thought the grains start showing signs after 2-3 days?  THX!

once I start to grow a little more and have lots to spare i  might experiment with tea lol.  I was thinking of cooling it down and mixing it with some kind of alchohol...sounds like a party lol (not sure if its a good idea )

Here's a reciepe at the shroomery      http://www.shroomery.org/9350/Shroom-Tea

And this 1 is very intersting... tea out of finished cakes   http://www.shroomery.org/6279/Substrate-Tea

Cultivation / Re: Foil on during colonization?
October 24, 2008, 05:30:51 AM
alright, thats actually the exact site i used to make the poly lid,  I kep the aluminum on sooo we'll c... got my fingers crossed.  The start didnt go as planned tho but i was still very sterile.  I only made 3 jars or wbs for a start (didnt want to make 2 many 4 my 1st time in case somthing goes wrong, i still have some of the spore syringe left)  I used the hawaian spores so wish me luck lol.  i figured ill save my others when i succeed!  ( Ban Hau Thanon, Thai-Lipa Yai, and Chitwan... they sound better lol ^_^) looking forward to chitwan baph

Cultivation / Foil on during colonization?
October 23, 2008, 04:42:21 PM
I recall reading in a post (Baph) that u said u dont need the aluminum foil on the jars during colonization, am i right?  I beleive u also said that a polyfil lid is enough (no tyvek or coffe filter lids).  I did just that, I got a Polyfil lid and thats it, is that good enough (also i have the aluminum foil over the lids but im not sure if its nessasary)?  will the aluminum affect the "breathing" process during colinization?

I'm just making sure that i remebered correctly...trying to play it safe!

General topics / Re: substrate after pc'ed
October 23, 2008, 07:09:06 AM
thx... 3 days was just a toss up number, i was just wandering how long can u keep the jars be4 inuculating.  so pretty much it differs and i just have to look at signs of contams.

I was just asking cuz i pc'ed my jars and had to go to work and now im going to inuculate. its going to be around 20-22 hrs after pced and its still in the pc never opened(dont know if that was a good idea or not).

after u pc a jar (wbs 4 me) how long can u keep it before u inuculate it?  will anything happen 2 it if u keep it in the pc or out (for more than lets say....3 days?)  does rye differ in this perspective? TY!

General topics / Masks?
October 21, 2008, 09:24:58 PM
I got everything i was going to get on my checklist except 1 thing... the surgical mask (i heard that u cant use the dust mask).  I was wondering who uses this and is it very neccassary?  if I sterilize my whole room(bath) and use the polyfil lid, can i get away with not wearing 1?

Alsp (off topic) the perlite in a FC, after its used for a grow how much, if any, times can u reuse it?  THX!

Does steaming VERM/BRF substrate jars in a pot with a lid for 1.5h work good at all?  What kind of sucess rate can I expect?
From what I been told and understand is yes, it does work good.  A PC is required for grains not the Pf-tek but yes its a good investment and a must if u want to do more advanced teks.  My 1st time growing and i just got 1, but for pf it's not necessary.

yes i was going to do the cakes but...lol, i figured i wanted to case the cakes and since im casing anyway, i might as well use grains since i have gotten a pc (also i feel that if i get past the colonization part w/ no contam's, which is almost the same as pf, i feel like there's not 2 much left).  Again, i was going to case anyway, and if i wasnt, i would eventually.  Im not goingt to make single cakes and not case them, well, cuz i like a little challange lol.  Plus i did A LOT of reasearch on multiple sites... and.. I GOT 4 SYRINGES!!! lol so i can mess up just a little bit. again wish me luck and ill keep yall updated!
