Perlite for drying?  that dosent make sence.  the only thing youll get from that is rotting mushrooms.  put them on a rack like they are on in the picture and put a fan blowing on them.  or get some dessicant, or a food deydrator.

On another note why not just turn it into a shotgun FC?  And why don't you want to use a air pump with perlite?  Those would be your easiest and cheapest ways to accomplish what your trying to do.

Use a power supply.  it plugs into the wall and usually has threaded nuts where you hook up anything you want to run on dc current.  Ive never done this before with pc fans but have with car audio equipment.  you could probably get one at radio shack or a store like that.

the cultivation of mycelium is safe.  If any thing contaminates with any other mold you need to cut it out or dispose of it right when you notice it.  black mold is very bad for your health.

Fresh Air Exchange.  the cakes need plenty of fresh air.

if its a repeated problem you can try turning your jars over and tap them so they fall down a little bit.  It will alow fresh air to get to the uncolonized area.  if that dosent work you are probably not keeping the jars far enough off the bottom when you boil them.  and its getting dryed out at the bottom.  as far as fruiting a partially colonized cake i have no idea.  i would imagine if you cut the uncolonized area out it would fruit.

General topics / Re: spore amount- to yield
February 18, 2009, 02:07:16 PM
The amount of spore solution is not related to the yield.  The spores produce mycelium which in turn produces the mushrooms.  Too little spore solution will result in slow growth of mycelium, too much could cause the substrate to be too wet.  Yield is primarily related to growing conditions and the substrate that you grow on.

they look ok to me.  just looks like brusing.  if you swabbed it and nothing came off i would just let them sit.  and see what happens.  if spots get bigger or greener or black throw them out.

Ive seen cakes shrink considerable from being over heated, other than that i dont know how to tell if they've been overheated.  104 degrees or above and mycelium will die.

the white growth is mycelium.  but all of that yellow and red shit is contamination.  ive never had a jar win the battle with contamination, but ive read that it can happen.  id wait a couple more days and see what happens.  if the mycelium dosent take ove when you dump them do it outside not in your home, to insure no bad mold gets in your house.

1. Yes the white cottony stuff is mycelium
2. You could see growth by now but not neccesarily.
Just Be patient.  The steam sterilization is just fine for pf tek.

If there are any stables in your area, they are usually more than happy to get rid of as much horse shit as you can take with you.   chech to see if there are any riding stables around you, at state parks or anything like that.

most likely your hygrometer is right is right.  i have a digital one right now that wont read off of the "outside" probe.  and i thought it was wrong for a long time.  but i dont think that is normal.  everything looks fine with the growth.  looks like every cake ive ever dunked and rolled.  just be patient and youll have shrooms in no time.
