PF - Tek / Re: FC lid with or without holes?
July 17, 2007, 12:23:50 PM
The moisture does not have to be trapped and it's okay if it goes out the holes in the lid. The purpose of all the holes is to create airflow. The air picks up moisture from the perlite. That's where the humidity comes from - the airflow through and around the perlite. You want to have all the holes in all the six sides including the lid. You want to have 4-5 inches of perlite. Soak the perlite, then drain it. No standing water in the FC and no blocking the holes! This FC works great! Easy, simple, low maintenance. No fanning or misting required but you can if you want.

At this point his order has been shipped.

So he should just go with it.

Next time choose a reputable supplier like spores101, ralphsters or sporelab.

I have to be suspicious.

They are associated with mycodome > universityscientific > sporebank.

SporeBank is well known to have a history of ripping people off.

Indeed, that's true, 8 days is a long time if you have ideal conditions. 3 days is right on.

Booyeah says his temps are 72 -82 degrees fahrenheit. If he's closer to 72 than 82 most of the time then 10 - 14 days to see growth is entirely to be expected. 8 days is nothing. SWIM always incubates at room temperature and she says it's normal to see growth on about the 10th day.

Nothin' wrong with growing at room temperature. It just takes longer. And so what if it does. Sure saves a lot of trouble fussing with tubs and heaters and everything.

8 days is not that long.

Your mixture is okay except not enough patience.   ^_^

Otherwise you're looking good so far.

They'll be fine.

Or you could try a bleach dunk.

Clean the cake then do a regular dunk first.

Then dunk in a bleach solution (1.25 tablespoons bleach in a gallon of water) for 30 minutes.

Rinse and move to the fruiting chamber.

PF - Tek / Re: Pressure cookers
March 04, 2007, 07:44:01 AM
A hot plate is sufficient to heat a pressure cooker if the hot plate can boil a pot of water. You will need high heat at first to heat up and boil the water to bring up the pressure. Then you will turn the heat down low to maintain the pressure. You have to watch the pressure and adjust the heat as the pressure rises and falls. With experience you will learn the right balance. Never leave the pressure cooker unattended. Be present at all times. Do not move the pressure cooker while it has pressure inside it. Do not use water, ice or cold air to try to speed up the cool down time. Just let it cool naturally. When the pressure is down move the pressure cooker to your clean area. As the pressure cooker cools down from zero pressure to cold it can suck in air. You want to have it in a clean air area. You could cover with a clean cloth as a filter.

If you're going to grow seriously it's worth the money to get a high quality high capacity pressure cooker like an all american. If you're only at home growing small scale then a less expensive smaller unit will serve you just fine. They all do the same thing. At high pressure water boils at a higher temperature. It's the higher temperature that sterilizes your jars and substrate.

Caution: the pressure cooker will reflect and concentrate heat below it. Be sure to have your hot plate on a fireproof, heat resistant and heat insulative surface. Allow plenty of room around the hot plate and pressure cooker on all sides. Be present at all times. Do not leave the hot plate and pressure cooker unattended. Read and follow all the instructions for using the hot plate and for using the pressure cooker.

A hot plate is a fire hazard and a pressure cooker is an explosive hazard.

There are safety features and redundancies but do not depend on them.

No. It may even be beneficial.

Can you be more specific with some detail? A photo?

I've always had a few jars that finish up a week or so behind the rest of the group.

Sometimes they just need to breathe. If you have the holes covered with tape or foil this might be the time to take that off.

Someone I know Who Isn't Me used the exact PF TEK and brand new syringes from reliable suppliers. SWIM incubated tub-in-tub at 80 degrees Fahrenheit.  SWIM says she didn't see any growth until at least two weeks. Like you SWIM used pint jars, four holes, covered only with foil.

SWIM thinks you just need a good dose of patience. Give it a month at least. Unless you see real and obvious evidence of contamination. SWIM didn't use the "little water should start to run out of the mixture" method. Instead, SWIM just used the exact measurements in the TEK.

Best of luck. Be patient.

The general rule and safest course of action is to discard this cake. You don't want to risk spreading the contamination and most of all you don't want to risk consuming toxins.

If it's truly an isolated spot you can cut it out at birthing time.

Soap and water cleaning is fine, just like washing dishes.

The ingredients in your substrate are far more contaminated than your utensils.

Your substrate gets sterilized in the pressure cooker anyway.

PF - Tek / Re: Vermiculite is a cancer causing agent
December 16, 2006, 09:01:02 AM
The mushrooms do not  grow from the vermiculite. They grow on it. The vermiculite is inert. It just provides a structure for the mycelium. The shrooms grow from the flour and water.

The vermiculite that you can buy now does not have the cancer causing agent in it. That mine was shut down. The cancer causing agent was asbestos, in very small quantities. You would have to inhale a lot of vermicuite dust for a very long time, such as working at the mine your whole life, before you would get cancer.

There is no asbestos in the vermiculite and there will be none in your shrooms.
