PF - Tek / First grow. Idea to keep FC temps up. Might this work??
« on: February 23, 2010, 03:52:42 AM »
Ok. I'm using the two tubs, water and aquarium heater for my incubation chamber. I still have the problem of keeping the heat up for fruiting. So, I was thinking, the two tub setup I have is: 50qt water tub with a 20qt tub submersed in it. For a fruiting chamber, could I do this: Remove the 20qt incubater tub, put a rack in the bottom of the 50qt that sits about 4-5 inches off the bottom. Then set the FC on the rack and fill the 50qt with 3-4 inches of water. The heat from the water (though not touching the FC) would HAVE to help keep the temps up in the FC.

The FC would be put together as normal, 4-5 inches of perlite, holes on the 6 sides. It would just be sitting an inch or 2 above 78 F water in a larger container who's lid is on loose (maybe even set the lid sideways). I think this would even help with humidity.

It's very possible I'm overthinking this. It's just that I can't fruit at room temp cause my room temp is around 65-66 F. Sometimes alot lower, 60-62 F. Can't go higher on that room temp either.

For the record, I'm using a Treasure Coast syringe on a BRF PF-Tek. I have just the one 10mL syringe and plan on 5 1/2 pint jars, 6 if it allows.

Thanks guys

PF - Tek / May have a problem
« on: February 18, 2010, 10:58:56 PM »
Well, if you read my last post you saw me bragg'n about my fancy pants lab-quality incubator. Well I got it out today to make sure its still calibrated (dial matches actual temp) and found it isn't working anymore. I know most everybody gets by without one, but, my problem is my ambient house temp never really gets above 68 F. For reasons beyond my control, we never set the heat higher than 66 F. Even if I could set it higher, it would be miserably hot in here. 66 F is quite warm to me.

I could really use some ideas/hints/tricks to keep a box or something likewise at a nice 78 F. I just need something big enough to keep 5-6 jars at the proper temp. What do some of you do in these cold winter months to keep your jars at a nice balmy temp?

I did see a method for FC's using two chambers. Basically you semi-submerge the FC in another container of water. The water in the 2nd container is heated to ~80 F using an aquarium heater. Thus the water would keep the FC warm. I could incubate in there I guess. I didn't wanna have to go to this extent, or even sure if it works, but if I have to......

Thanks guys.

PF - Tek / BRF Question
« on: February 16, 2010, 09:51:16 PM »
Hi all. This is my first post, and while it might seem like common sense, I want to be sure before I proceed.

I'm having trouble finding BRF in my area. The brown rice itself is very abundant of course, just not the flour. Now, I got a BAD ASS food processer for christmas, it can do everything (as a matter of fact, it's doing my taxes as I type this). Can I use just any box of plain ol' brown rice and render it to a flour consistency and use this in my "cake mix"? Or should I look for a certain style?

And yes, I know the BRF is easily available on the web, but after paying shipping it's like $12 a pound. I can get 10 pounds of brown rice at the supermarket for that price.

Also, I've decided to start with one spore syringe of "Treasure Coast" from SporeWorks for my first go. Should be good for 5 jars shouldn't it?

Thoughts?
