Ive never tried such a set up, and got away from using perlite very quickly when i started.  co2 is heavier than o2 so... I'm not saying it will be an issue but if you have an issue its a place to start. a few holes right above the perlite layer will solve this.  you need to keep your humidity as high as possible 85 is on the verge of low. i seem to remember people talking about a "tropic air" system.  http://www.reptiledirect.com/tropicairhumidifierandairexchangernopump.aspx you can see it here.  very easy to make your own with some ingenuity.  ultimately as long as you have good FAE, and RH, and sterile techniques no matter how you get it you will do well.

be patient. i know it seems like forever, but its not. BRF with a multispore injection can take a while.

Cultivation / Re: Website that I bought Spores from
« on: March 02, 2012, 06:11:59 PM »
More than likely its contamination from not being clean enough.  i have never ordered anything from sporestore.com, but if you doubt them I recommend http://ralphstersspores.com/  your contamination could be coming from any number of points. i say clean your jars very well and follow the pf tek on this site to the "t".  use a candle instead of a lighter and flame the needle after each jar.  there is a tek i remember using an oven to help keep contamination out while innoculating. heat the oven on a low temp and then pull the top rack out and use it as your table top and do all your work right down almost inside the oven.  the idea behind this is that hot air rises so nothing can fall out of the air into your jars because all the air is going up.  i have heard conflicting results from this but have never had contamination when i have used it.

you can try cold shocking them if you feel the need, but I would wait a few more days. i know how anxious it can make you, always waiting, but thats part of this hobby. it will pass and then they seem to grow faster.  usually after colonization they need a week to get ready and then around 2 weeks to fruit. those times are not set in stone. im not sure how much light they are getting from your window but that could be a problem, light is a pinning trigger and also tells them which direction to grow.  if you put a light on them, any bulb is fine and as long as they get 4 hours or so a day should be sufficient.

wait until they are cool to the touch. the heat will kill the spores if it is to hot. no harm in waiting overnight.

you must find the fine vermiculite, perlite will not work.

It is contamination if it is not white.  No harm in letting it sit a while longer and see if the mycelium will over take the contamination.  If the red grows any toss it.

at first expect to wait 2 months if not longer.  once your rolling good, and have everything down to a science, you can harvest every month or so.

yeah they looked like nice fat pins at first some grew to the size the large jaw breakers.  I have no explination to it being bad genetics or what.  I was using the same spawn for everything i was doing, at the time i was experimenting with a few different teks and it was only the straw that did it.

I myself have given up on straw.  ALL of my experiences have ended with the result of those blobs and no mushrooms, I've went as far as to just wait and see what happens and they just get trich. I never could figure out what i was doing wrong, so now I just use coir.

Materials needed:
•2 liter plastic coke bottle
•razor knife
This terrarium is made by cutting a section out of a 2 liter coke bottle. This serves two purposes. First, it allows you to put a fully colonized rice cake inside the bottle. The second purpose is it allows the volume of the bottle to be reduced to the point where the moistness of the rice cake can keep it humid.

Remove a section of the bottle using the razor knife. The cut on the lower part of the bottle is not very critical. The top cut is more difficult to do correctly. It needs to be right at the point where the bottle is starting to decrease in diameter. This is because the top part of the bottle is going to be inserted into the bottom part of the bottle and the two sections need to seal tightly.

The best thing to do is start lower than the diagram indicates and cut small sections off until the top piece of the bottle fits snugly and easily into the bottom section. Once you locate the correct place to cut for the type of bottle you are using, you can simply cut at the same place and make multiple bottles to handle as many cakes as you wish to fruit at any time.

The cap for the bottle must be screwed on tightly. A damp paper towel can be placed on the bottom of the bottle to help raise the humidity inside the bottle. Twice a day the bottle should be opened to allow new air to be available for the rice cake to consume. It is best to fan the rice cake to insure new air is surrounding the cake before sealing it back in the bottle. This is the major draw back to this terrarium. If you have a dozen cakes it can become a burden to exchange the air twice a day.

I wouldn't say its an issue with cakes. its just they perform better when you drop the humidity after pinning begins.  they will still fruit if you dont.

in the vaults on erowid they talk about melting points of psilocybin, and psilocin at 185C, and 175C, respectively.  that's 365F, and 347F.  i would assume loss of potency would start to come into play before actually reaching these points.

indeed, Ive gotten my facts mixed up.  106F is thermal death for mycelium.  thermal death for psilocybin and psilocin isnt until much higher around 400F.

I know sporeworks has them.  before you buy them read this

http://www.iamshaman.com/amanita/cultivation.htm

why do you want to grow them?  I myself have never eaten them, but from what Ive read it is not a pleasant experience and you don't get the full affects unless you do the urine consumption while on them.  Plus they are legal if you really want to try them.

If they were not cool when you inoculated you could have killed the spores but its still to early to tell, wait another week or 2 and if theres no growth then something is wrong.  a little light while checking on them is ok.  but they need to be in complete darkness.  they don't need to be checked very often, once every couple days until they are close to being done.
