Title: casing material alternatives
Post by: neophytic on December 02, 2008, 07:38:23 AM
Having trouble locating peat or jiffy mix (most lawn and garden departments are pretty bare this time of year here).

The closest thing I have found to peat around here is "seed starter", which contains sphagnum peat, vermiculite, perlite, and lime. Sounds like what I need, but I am unsure if it's the right kind of lime, or if it will kill my fungi.

Should I pick up the seed starter, or use 100% verm. for the casing?

Go here http://www.fungifun.org/Store/Store  click on the vermiculite link and viola you will find verm.
Then click on casing and you will find Sphagnum Peat Moss and the cheapest of all casing material, potting soil.
There are many places on the net to order what you need.

I forgot to mention that my jars were fully colonized and I wasn't sure if I could wait for an internet shipment. However, I may have tracked down a local source for sphagnum peat. Thanks though for the responses (even if they seem like dumb Q's sometimes!). You guys are infinitely helpful.  -_-

Can't be 100% sure without looking at the package, but that "seed starter" sounds like a perfect casing mix.
