Title: Little bit of green
Post by: The Psilocyber on June 23, 2006, 06:17:10 PM
I recently birthed a cake that i prepared with the pf tek. After birthing i noticed that the substrate at the top of the jar had a very small spot of mold. Other than this very small spot (probably the size of a dime) growing through the top of the vermiculite layer i used as a sort of filter, the rest of the cake seems perfectly covered with very healthy looking mycelium.

My question is this. Does that small spot of green completely compromise the health of the entire cake? If it does not spread is it safe to eat mushrooms that have grown off of the cake? I really appreciate the input, this forum is a lifesaver.

Chances are the contamination will spread throughout the cake. Also should the cake fruit, it is possible for the mushrooms to absorb some toxins produced by the mold.

As a general rule: if it's contaminated, dump it.
