Title: Sterilizing w/ an Electric Food Steamer. Possible?
Post by: dub504 on May 29, 2009, 11:36:21 AM
Is it possible to sterilize the jars/substrate mix in an electric food steamer in place of the pressure cooker? It seems like it would work on the same principal.
Thanks,

You can use an electric steamer for PF-Tek im sure, but NOT grains.

Thanks, I wonder if I should sterilize them the same amount of time as a pressure cooker or longer just to be safe.

You don't actually need a PC for the PF Tek . The alternate instructions call for boiling the jars for 90 minutes. I would say that is a good minimum. Given how long the whole life cycle takes, why not be patient and steam them for 2 hours. You definitely want to kill all the little buggies and molds.
