I go with a boxfan and screen setup.
PW uses a dehydrator if I remember correctly.

My point is,It comes down to what you want.
I don't mind waiting a extra day or two.
I've never ran into a problem(i.e rotting) as long as there is air on them drying them out 24/7 after harvest
Other's want it within 8 - 12 hrs.
I remember one batch I did a 12 hr fan dry and then put them in my oven at 150, and watched them like a hawk until proper dryness with no noticable loss in active compound.
I don't recommend anyone doing what I did, cause there is better ways as I stated above.

You want "cracker" dry in the end.

"can I leave em in a wooden box???"

I wouldn't unless you set it up using dessicant(spelling)

"to dry them is to preserve the right?"

Yes.
They store better once dried.

"can I eat them half way dry?"

You can eat them Fresh,Half-Dry,or Dried,as long as they are NOT showing signs of rot, then you are good.

Most people set it at the lowest or lower end settings.
No higher than 95 - 105F I'd guess.
Remember heat decomposes the compounds.

"and for how long?"

Until they are cracker dry.
But it is wise to check on them alot so you don't screw them up.
