Millet

So I went down to my local health food store today to pick up som more rye berries but they still wernt in yet.. I remembered reading in a thread the other day that somone wished they could find plain millet by itself cuz its great to work with.. As luck would have it, I found a bag of organic whole millet right next to where the rye was spose to be. Much to my amazement though, it doesnt have a "preperation for innoculation and cultivation of mushroom spores" section on the instructions.. Should I treat this like rye and soak for a day to hatch endospores, or is it ok to just simmer it up? How long should I cook it? how much water? etc....

  Welcome to the elite club that has been able to "find" millet.  I have been using this for years now,.  alone as well as mixed with my other grains.  It colonizes Extremely fast, and if mixed with other grains seems to accelerate the colonization of those as well.
  I am not much with the measuring any longer.  I suppose with time I have developed the eye for certain grains, but until you are comfortable, you could do a soak for a hour or so, drain well as you would casing, and PC for an hour.
   If you are mixing with other grains.  Prepare them the way you normally would and toss in a couple of oz/pt jar, along with your grains.  Just be sure the millet is drained well, as to not upset ( increase ) the water balance or over saturate.  Done alone the millet should be slightly damp before PC and nice and fluffy after the PC process.
  Since the product has been well prepared for consumption, I wouldn't really worry about endospores.  I would just go with it.  I do, and have no problems, and what I am using on a regular basis is made for birds. But, it's pure millet.
  You'll love this, especially if you are doing a g2g.  3 - 6 days you could have 100% colonization!

So just soak it for an hour... no need to simmer it?

I don't soak it. I just simmer it for 30 mins, drain between 30 min to an hour. Here is where I differ. I don't have a PC so I steam the jars in an electric food steamer for 2 hours. I repeat this the next day to kill endospores. I haven't had a problem w/ this method using millet/brown rice.

  I am just soaking briefly to gain my moisture threshold.  After the soak/drain I am off to the PC.
  Done deal from there.  There are times I don't even soak, depending what else I have going on.  When I do a Brn. Rice or Rye mix with the millet, i just go straight to the PC most times.
  But, if you aren't familiar with the moisture retention you might want to take other steps, to not over saturate the millet and/or your mixed grains.
